Winnipeg gives up a 2024 second round pick for the versaltile veteran forward who is under contract through 2023-24 with a $4 million AAV. Nashville did not retain.
Welll, Cheveldayoff had to do something to bolster Winnipeg's sputtering offense. He did. Is it enough? Will he do more? Time will say.

I thought he would go after a bigger name like Meier.

For sure, he must have been pursuing Meier. But supposedly the asking price is astronomical (2023 first rounder, a future second pick, a grade A prospect, plus an above average youngish NHL roster player). And the team acquiring him is stuck qualifying Meier at $10 million and there is probably no way the player gives up that leverage unless, at minimum, the team offers 8 x 8 (and who knows, maybe Meier would say sorry I have no interest in staying in the Great North).
Cheveldayoff probably mulled it over and said this is too rich. However, I would not be surprised if he goes out and gets another secondary scorer to insert on the third line.
