A lot of players changing address. The condition of the 2024 2nd/1st is that it becomes a first if the Devils make the conference finals in either of the next two years and Meier plays in 50% of their playoff games.
Of note, the Devils held onto all their top prospects, which is a huge win in getting the Sharks best player.

On the flip side, how good are the devils going to be? They’re in the midst of a breakout season with Hughes developing into a superstar, and have two potential top pairing defense prospects waiting in the wings.

Thanks, NW.
This is a hard to digest trade with so many pieces moving.
The Devils get a stud winger (Meier) for their playoff date against the Rangers. And they can negotiate with him about making the relationship long-term and if nothing works then they flip him in the summer or before the next trade deadline. The rest of what the Devils got is hard to discern. Harrington is a depth d-man, basically an AHL-NHL tweener at this point. I had no idea who Htakka is, sounds like a totally fringe guy if we are talking about ever playing in the NHL. Ibragimov is a nothing burger in ECHL. Emond is a goalie from the Q who has not found any foothold yet as a professional but with goalies who knows. And the 2024 5th round lottery ticket.
The Sharks got four pieces that matter: 2023 first and 2024 first or second depending on how the Devils do in the playoffs; Zetterlund who was not that highly regarded in his draft year but has come on strong and seriously lit it up in the AHL; and former first round d-man the talented Russian giant Mukhamadulin who has not quite put it all together but is still a 21 year old kid with potential. The remainder of the Shark's haul looks insignificant.
Man, there is a lot going on in this trade. Perhaps that helps both GMs placate their fan bases because at first glance nothing about this trade seems cut and dry.

I'm still wondering what TB will do in response to Toronto and Boston.

I'm still wondering what TB will do in response to Toronto and Boston. How about mortgage the farm? They got Tanner Jeannot for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and Cal Foote... insanity

Young, relatively cost-controlled, big, mean and nasty, with some tantalizing upside power forwards are always in huge demand. And Nashville had no particular reason to trade him because they could have just re-signed the RFA for a normal contract. So basically this is the perfect storm where the buyer has to go way overboard to acquire the 'unicorn.'
Jeannot's productivity in no way justifies this trade. But GMs covet guys like him. Anderson is on a much different type contract which would make the return considerably less but he would have various suitors willing to pay way more than some people would imagine for a guy who does not put up big point totals.

I'm still wondering what TB will do in response to Toronto and Boston. Here is a nice stress relieving exercise. Whenever you feel down about the Habs struggling ...open up capfriendly.com and look at Tampa's draft picks for the next three years. It's actually scary, how few draft picks they have. In 2023, they only have a 6th round pick and two 7th round picks.

Anderson is on a much different type contract which would make the return considerably less but he would have various suitors willing to pay way more than some people would imagine for a guy who does not put up big point totals. Jeannot had an unsustainable scoring percentage last year (one of the biggest red flags there is) and this season he has reverted to what he was before. Duh. Still, Brisebois is no Bergevin, so maybe Tampa knows something we don't. Frankly, I think it's just desperation. Tampa's core is aging; this year may be the last kick at the can, and since the top 6 is filled in, Julien is trying to fix the bottom 6. That's a silly price to pay, even if the 2025 first roiunder is top 10 protected. What they don't often say at first is what the pick converts to if it falls into the protected area. Calgary's pick that's ours converts to a non protected pick the following year and that's the kind of thing I love. I remember seeing Jeannot's name pop up on the scoring stats last year and wondering "Who is this guy?" I saw him play and went "meh". He has one 'off the wall' year and Poile sees the opportunity to maximize his value. What he has got going for him is an $800K salary and an RFA designation next year. Otherwise, a guy like Anderson would have been so much better. But Anderson costs a lot more for a much longer time. Jeannot will drop the gloves too so maybe that's what Brisebois was paying for. Dunno. I wouldn't even give up a 2nd for that guy. You could probably pick up a defensively solid, AHL energy guy who can fight for a lot less.

Yikes Josh is more expensive, but a much better player. He seems to be adjusting his game, not just racing in and smacking, or trying to smack, defensemen into the boards. A little more deliberate and it's paying off. His point totals are going up. Marty again? I'm still not sure about his hockey IQ, but, to me, he's now worth $2.5MM a year instead of $1MM a year.

and former first round d-man the talented Russian giant Mukhamadulin who has not quite put it all together but is still a 21 year old kid with potential. It's hard to judge Mukhamadullin as it is to judge any KHL player. Those point totals in the NHL 6-19-25 in 67 games might not be impressive. He has, however, the third best +/- on a top 3rd KHL team (Ufa Salavat Yulayev for the geography nerds) located not far from Kazakhstan and appears to be their top defenseman, at the age of 20. I was hoping the Habs could somehow get him if NJ needed some of our guys (a healthy Monahan and Edmundson). I wouldn't sleep on him.
