Bruins lost 9th game tonight. So won't be tying the Habs record.
Every year the best team gets off to a great start and the media starts hyping how they will match the Habs record for fewest losses in a season of 8. And every year they come up short. It sort off feels like the Miami Dolphins undefeated season where the Dolphins get together and celebrate each season once every team in the NFL loses a game. I'm doing the same!

Bruins lost their 10th game after only 65 games. Not even close to Habs record.
So now they're on about all the wins and points. How do they get away comparing records of current teams to the teams before the OT and SO gimmicks were introduced?
Habs record was 60-8-12 in 1976-77. So 12 games would have gone to OT and if they won 50% that would be 6 wins! That's 66 wins!!! And they would have won a lot more than 50%. Think about what Scotty would have had for 3 on 3: start with Lemaire, Guy and Pointu, then Mahovolich, Shutt, and Larry. The game would be over by then but if not, take your pick of Cournoyer, Wilson, Gainey and maybe Mario up front with Savard.
Meanwhile the Bruins have 7 wins in OT or SO this year. So if they were playing without the gimmick, they would have 7 fewer wins and 7 fewer points.
Bruins should not be in the same conversation! Like I said: Piss off!

It just proves how great the 76/77 Habs were. I believe I saw a stat that showed they lost 1 and tied 2 of their last 17 games that year. That's how you finish off a season.
Those were such great days. I used to be shocked!, absolutely shocked! if we didn't win the game that evening, regardless of who we were playing.

I haven't told this story in years, but I used to watch all of Montreal's big games by myself in the basement of my parents' house, because I didn't want anyone around me if they lost ... to this day, the 70s Habs absolutely ruined me, as a fan ... Cheers.

I too was. big fan back then. If the game wasn't on TV I'd be by my radio. And if the other team did not have a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd they weren't winning the game, and often that wasn't enough.

For me, it began in Grade 8 with the 7-game upset of the mighty Bruins (to come full circle) in 1971. It was a Sunday afternoon game on CBS--Dan Kelly with the call. I've never seen a Gallivan call of Game 7. Did CBC pick up the CBS feed? A lot of fun going to school the next day to see my Habs' buddies.

When you are 5 and watching your first cup parade on your fathers shoulders, it's hard not to expect greatness.
The mid 70s was a bit tumultuous for me and time is starting to erase some absolute great moments. Which of course is why I'm so pissed off with the current version of the Habs.
I got maybe 30 years to go and I'm 50/50 if we see great teams like we had before.

Not unless Quebec City gets a team and Molson faces "contender or goodbye" pressure. Right now, all he has to do is pretend he's trying and the public throws money at him.

I agree Molson had the wool thrown over his head by the snake oil salesman but I think he has seen the light and will let HuGo spend what they need to build a winner... the change in the organization between burgerbrains last day and today is quite dramatic imo... we have a good prospect pool, we will get more this draft and they are starting to clear out deadweight.... I am happy with the direction this team is going and the comraderie the young core have...

People have to remember it is different times. There are twice as many teams than the 70's. You might be lucky to get back to back nowadays. Or 3 in 4 years. But eventually you will have to pay the piper and rebuild and suck for many years. See Chicago, LA, Detroit AND soon to be Boston, Tampa and Pittsburgh.

The Bruins may better the Habs' 132 pts., but it won't be at 80 GP. Best they can get is 131.

And as has been mentioned before...considering the abundance of HoF talent--had the gimmicks been in use back then, quite a few of the Habs' 12 ties would've been turned into Ws. Let's be modest and say half. 66-8-6. 138 pts.

The Bruins record of wins-losses-OT stands at 62-12-5 after 79 games. Under the 70s rules it would be, 51-12-16 for 118 points. A far cry from 132 points of that Habs team. As a matter of fact, the Habs Dynasty of the late 70s finished with 127, 132, 129, 115. Heck the Bruins of 70-71 had 121 points but in 78 games. And didn't win the cup. An unknown by the name of Ken Dryden stole it from them. So this Bruins team isn't even the best Bruins team. Nowhere near the best NHL team ever.

And I believe the Habs still hold the record for regulation wins in a regular season @ 60. Of the Red Wings' 62 wins in 1995-96, 3 were in OT....dropping their regulation Ws to 59.

So who does a Habs fan root for in the Bos v. Fla 7th game.?
I, like all Habs fans, hate the Bruins and would love for their "best ever season" come to an end. But I don't want to jeopardize the 17th overall pick we got from Fla.
Yet, I hate the Leafs most of all and think Bruins have better chance of beating the Leafs in next round. To see the Leafs win a Cup would truly require years of therapy particularly with Hockey Night in Canada starting every game for the next 5 seasons with Tavares hoisting the Cup.
Can someone, anyone, help me sort out this dilemma?

Yes I'm overjoyed to see the Bruins fell flat on their face. Perhaps people will start to realize that taking advantage of the bonus point gimmick to have "the best season ever" is just that: a gimmick and a hoax. Bruins were a good team but no where near the Habs of the late 70s. Tonight proved it. Nuf said! Except it is worth noting that the Bruins window is now closed - enjoy the fall Beantown. Now on to my/our issues. If Fla beats TO our 17th overall pick falls to 29th or worse. And if the Leafs win then the media hype will be relentless as they move ever closer to a Cup which would be extremely traumatic. Sure hope Dr. Cranky is able to prescribe some morphine

There was a tweet today stating that because of performance bonuses in the contracts of Krejci and Bergeron, the Bruins face a CAP 'penalty' of $4.1 MM next season. I can't find anything like that on Capfriendly. Can anyone enlighten us on that?
What is more obvious is that Boston rolled the dice this year with 9 UFA's on their roster (which might explain how they scored 10% higher than their expected goals for). UFA's always do well in their contract years.
Now a few of those guys are easily replaced. The Bruins aren't going to sweat over Chris Wagner, Garnet Hathaway, Connor Clifton or even Nick Foligno, but then there are Dmitri Orlov, Tyler Bertuzzi, Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. I'm guessing the latter 2 are probably going to hang up the skates and even if they don't, they won't be as productive as this year. The Bruins have no picks this year until the 3rd round, no picks next year until Round 4 and in 2025, no 2nd round pick. Slim pickin's (sorry). Their current pipeline makes the Sahara look like Lake Superior, so Mr Sweeney and Mr Neely are going to have to work for a living. How patient will Jacobs Jr. be? I'll be enjoying it every step of the way.

Any rebuild will be extended by the fact the pipeline is a dribble and they have so few 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks in the next couple of years. It's the price for going all in and flaming out.
I kinda feel for all those Bruin fans, having their hopes dashed.....
Nah, I don't. I put up with all the gloating all year long...suffer, baby, suffer.

Undoubtedly, the Bruins already know what the carryover performance bonus overages are going to be ($4.1 million seems plausible), but Capfriendly does not ink that line item until the NHL releases those figures (along with ELC bonus overages) during the summer. For instance, on Capfriendly, does not show any carryover overages for Montreal in 2023-24 and I think it is obvious there will be, though a smaller total than otherwise because many of the kids on ELCs lost so many games due to injuries.
Back to the Bruins, losing their 1C and 2C would be a tough blow. A die hard Bruins fan (coached my son two or three years ago) opined to me that while Coyle and Zacha are nice players, they are not comparable to Bergeron and Krecji. I mean, Coyle is 31 years old and his career high is 56 points and Zacha is now 26 and his top year is 57 points.
I would think Sweeney will want to explore UFA options because he certainly lacks the assets to make meaningful trades. However, I am not sure he can shop for any high-end luxury goods because the Bruins are in cap trouble with the carryover overages and Swayman needing a new contract. The kid's numbers were so outstanding I would think he digs in and says I will take the Spencer Knight contract or I will confidently take my chances in arbitration.
