even the TSN "experts" were positive about it.

I'm very happy. This is one guy (the other being Ellerby) that I hoped the Habs had in their sights. Great pick IMHO.

From what Timmins and Gainey said on TV, he was the guy they wanted with their first pick. I guess that's pretty positive. But I have no idea who this guy is.
The habs seem to have a special love for the Mister Hockey winners.

"Ryan McDonagh, while not as advanced or polished as some of the others, may have the highest offensive upside of this group. He brings a nice mix of size, offensive instincts, excellent skating and agility, a big shot off the point, and an aggressive nature. He'll bang bodies and looks to move up into the rush whenever he has the chance, but also exercises discretion on when to jump." www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/columnist/woodlief/2007-06-11-draft-defensemen_N.htm

My son played against this kid. He was very good even 3-5 years ago. Crown jewel and leader of the very stacked Toronto Junior Canadiens midget team. He looked good in the Habs colours then as he will again soon. He's gonna be great in front of Price.

Could be wrong, but I think you're thinking of Ryan McDonough, a junior forward with the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL.

I'm very happy with this pick.
As I mentioned earlier, Timmins should have gained the respect of every Habs fan by now. He knows what he's doing at the draft table, and I've read nothing but very positive things about McD.
Defensively this team is looking very strong in the next 3-5 years, which should make CO very happy.

The habs seem to have a special love for the Mister Hockey winners. And runners up, as they drafted JT Wyman in '04, he was the runner up to the Mr Hockey award in '04. I believe that McDonagh was the first to win it from a private school. CDH won the state tournament last year in his junior season and were good again this year but I think McDonagh missed some games due to injury. Also I think it was TSN that said he was one of the most impressive guys at the combine.

Our defensive prospects are starting to look pretty good: Emelin Valentenko O'byrne Fischer Carle McDonagh Good point. These seem to be either really big guys, really skilled, puck-moving defensemen, or both.

The kid adapted from HS hockey to the U-18 very well, and should really develop in a strong program at Wisconsin. Last year it was U of Minn with all its first rounders, this year it is the Badgers.
I really like this pick as Ryan brings size, skating, skill and smarts to the table, and at our weakest position. Nice, nice pick.

Max Giese is a scout for McKeen's and did an incredibly detailed Top 100 listing. He follows the USHL and NCAA closely so gets to see a lot of hockey that tends to elude fans in Canada. Anyway, just wanted to post his thoughts on some of the players the Habs picked. Source www.sharkspage.com/2007_nhl_draftpreview.html4. D Ryan McDonagh, 6-1 205, 6-13-1989, Cretin- Durham Minnesota High School, 26 gp – 14 g – 26 a – 40 points. ++ Huge upside, soft hands, good skater, creative + Physical, smart - Needs to prove himself at higher levels. The best defenseman eligible this year, Ryan McDonagh possesses special ability both with or without the puck. A University of Wisconsin recruit, Ryan was named Mr. Hockey for the top player in Minnesota this season. He is the most complete defenseman in this draft and has terrific upside at both ends of the rink. McDonagh is a swift skater with nimble feet and a quick stride with a very impressive burst of power behind it. His acceleration is especially impressive and he also possesses a great top gear. His agility is superb for a big man as he can twist and turn at top speeds all the while maintaining possession of the puck. Ryan is blessed with exceptional hands and is creative with the puck as he’ll stick handle around the opposition with dangles that look they are coming from a first line forward. He’s composed with the puck, he sees the ice well, and makes a heads up first pass. Ryan is an instinctive passer and also displays impressive creativity while quarterbacking the power play. His hockey sense is superb and he seems to read the play one step quicker than his peers. He has the size and strength a long with an adequate physical edge to be a physical one on one defender. Ryan maintains a healthy gap with his man at all times and because of his swift mobility he can stay with anyone one on one. McDonagh also has exceptional stick work and defensive positioning to make him a formidable defender. He competes hard every night and while he’s already a complete defenseman, there is also tons of upside here and several years from now he will turn out to be the best defenseman taken in the 2007 draft.

Mmmm... big, nasty, mobile defenseman... I love this pick... Originally written back in January... www.risemag.com/main.cfm?actionId=globalShowStaticContent&screenKey=InTheMag&articleID=8092&categoryKey=NextIf you're going to compare one high school defenseman to Chris Chelios, Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul, Minn.) senior Ryan McDonagh is the perfect candidate. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has a similar build and skill set as the Detroit Red Wings star and is even bound for Chelios' alma mater, defending national champion Wisconsin. Like Chelios, McDonagh combines tremendous grit and leadership with exceptional skill. "He's one of those rare total packages," says Cretin-Derham head coach Jim O'Neill. "Probably his greatest ability is his skating for his size. He's very competitive and he's got a little nasty side to him."McDonagh showed off his skills last year by earning All-State honors after tallying 12 goals and 33 assists. He scored two goals to lift Cretin-Derham to its first-ever hockey state title with a 7-0 win over Grand Rapids in the Class AA final. McDonagh has also played on U.S. Under-17 and Under-18 National Teams. And what's scary is that McDonagh has the potential to be even better, which is why he's a possible first-round pick in the 2007 NHL Draft.

great interview, he's very mature, amazing for a high school kid. i liked that he said part of the reason that he chose wisconsin is because of the players that come out of there are "defense-wise". he's already got good size and can skate, if he takes two more big steps in the next two summers he could challenge for a spot in 08.

McDonagh reminds me more of Gary Suter than Chris Chelios. I think Timmins mentioned that when someone asked him to compare him to an NHL player. I think he meant Gary Suter, but perhaps Ryan. The Suters are very similar in any case.
