I've like many been very bored this season basically waiting for it to end as Injuries and the potential draft pick being number one have been the major topics of discussion all year with the exception of trade deadline day that took our attention away from the other things momentarily, I personally dont see us as any kind of player on the market this summer with the exception of maybe between the pipes or decent character guys who can help with the development of the kids (after all we likely won't see Druoin resigned so that category will take a major hit ) this list is obviously going to change before opening of UFA season but i'd like to hear all your thoughts on what may or may not happen. capfriendly.com free agents

Assuming nothing happens with Dubois, I anticipate a quiet summer. Montreal is not yet close to being good, so adding 'the missing piece' via the UFA route seems counterintuitive. And management may believe another season with modest expectations in the standings is a good time to let guys like Harvey-Pinard and Ylonen get another long look in order to better gauge what they are as NHLers.
I see a decent chance Edmundson gets traded this summer, so it would not be crazy to imagine Hughes sniffs around for a veteran d-man, most likely a righty. However, I doubt it would be a big ticket signing.
I think a young team that struggles on the scoreboard a lot of nights and struggles to get protected by the refs should make sure to have a critical mass of big bad-tempered guys. If you subtract Edmundson (I know he did not fight this season but he certainly can, and no one jerks with him when he is on the ice) then I think it would be prudent to add a mean dude on defense and/or fourth line right wing.

Agree strongly, folatre. Xhekaj can't be our only decent fighter (I'm assuming Pezzetta doesn't make the team next year). We need some abrasiveness, especially up front, to support WiFi. Fourth line probably.

Before his season ended with the shoulder injury, Xhekaj was leading the league in fights. That is probably not ideal going forward.
Hockey is debatable, but I actually think Pezzetta is a lock on the roster. He has seven fights and six goals in 59 games. That is solid production for a fourth liner. And he leads the league in hits per sixty minutes.
A big RHD like Severson and Mayfield would be nice but it may well be that management wants to leave as many spots as possible open on the blue line for the young guys.

Did someone mention Dubois? Because I get this cow prod notifications...
I haven't got a clue who is available but a youngish RHD and goalie float around, we got to get the fishing net dusted off even if we don't put it in the water.

I think for those wanting Dubois, you should be hoping Jets don't make playoffs. Not making playoffs will make it more likely for a rebuild and wanting to unload Dubois. No the team is taking Dubois given his pending UFA status next year and his indicated desire to go to Mtl. Everything I'm reading says HuGo is no giving up the farm and Jets are hoping to get a big payoff. If Jets can't make the playoffs with their current roster they need to recalculate and start selling, and moving on from Dubois. The other side of the equation is that given their roster and Dubois, and they can't make the playoffs, is Dubois that much of a pick up for the Habs?

I think a quick first round exit for the Jets will have the same effect in terms of forcing Cheveldayoff's hand. He can't let Dubois, Scheifele, and Hellebyuck walk next summer and it is probably wiser just to trade them this summer than hoping the stars align at the trade deadline.
The return on Dubois will be reduced to some extent by him being so adamant about going to free agency. But there are still a lot of teams that imagine a big impact centre can be the missing piece for a deep playoff run even if he is a rental.
If I felt sure that Montreal's roster plus Dubois is a near playoff lock then I would go with that offer sheet sneak attack. But this current roster is bad and I am not sure adding Dubois will immediately transform it, so I would probably be too risk averse to surrender an unprotected 2024 first rounder.
I believe Gorton/Hughes will be among various teams making offers to Winnipeg this summer. Maybe Habs management already knows how far they will go, so all Cheveldayoff can do is take the best offer, which may not be Montreal's, and move on with what almost certainly looks like it will have to be a rebuild in Winnipeg.

If we get dubois this year he'll just get injured...
I don't think this is the year to make this kind of move, if he wants to be here... truly wants to be here... he'll make it happen... been fooled too many times where the habs have been used as a bargaining chip or last chance for a contract...
The only FA in his prime, in decades, that signed with us because he wanted to be here was Tyler Toffoli IMO and we traded him.

At some point you can't be afraid to give up picks. I would 100% give up a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd for PLD on an offer sheet, but the cost flips to 2 1st round picks if the contract is above $8.4mn in AAV?
I think the addition of Dubois + built-in development + low injuries = borderline playoff team, which means the pick would be somewhere in the #12-20 range. I don't believe we are drafting in the top 5 next year with PLD.
I guess the trade offer needs to be better than the offer sheet return. Otherwise Winnipeg can always match the offer sheet, thereby locking up PLD against his wishes or use the contract to execute a sign-and-trade with Montreal or some other team.

It's great to have a plan and a timeline but you can't always do it on your terms. Sometimes the opportunity comes up and you can either take it or not. There may still be a chance to get PLD if he ends up as a UFA next summer but there is a chance to get him now and accelerate the rebuild. It's hard to say if it's a good deal since we don't know a) if HuGo are even interested and b) what the cost is, but he would certainly fit in well with this team.

I'd be surprised if we get PLD by way of offer sheet. Way too much to pay, particularly as he will be available in a year for free, and has indicated he wants to come to Mtl. And why give Jets opportunity to match and then trade him on their terms to any team they want. and I don't see PLD accepting offer sheet knowing he would lose control of where ehe wants to play if Jets match.
The issue for HuGo is do you wait until next summer and get PLD for free and risk another team coming in and giving PLD an offer he can't refuse after Jets allow him to negotiate with another team? Or do you give up something to Jets to lock PLD before FA? Much may depend on how much improper back channeling is going on between PLD's camp and HuGo. Keep in mind, it is in PLD's interest that Habs give up as little as possible to get him so Habs are that much more of a contender when he is here.
If we move before FA, I've got to believe it will cost us at the very least a first rounder and then some as Jets are guaranteed to get that next trace deadline by moving PLD as a rental so they ain't taking less. And the problem with letting PLD play for another team in the playoffs next year is that he may really like it with new team (LA, NY) and resign with them.
I think Hugo can't be too cute with this. I'd ask Jets for opportunity to negotiate with PLD, and if we come to good deal with PLD then be prepared to give up some assets. But Jets ain't allowing PLD to negotiate until after they are eliminated.

All you people with all these scenarios on my beloved PLD are playing with my fragile emotions!
Ideally Jets and Panthers are out, locking their positions and we get permission to talk to him. They want Panthers first, fine. Done.
With Dubois I doubt we are bottom feeders. If healthy, we are mid pack. IF...
Now if the hockey God's smile and we draft Bedard, I'm throwing away all my emotional support dolls...

Boston and habsorbed, in another thread drkcloud posted a link detailing an interesting offer sheet gambit Montreal could use. The short and long of it is that Montreal would give Dubois a 1 year/$6.3 million offer sheet and jam up Winnipeg since the compensation from the Habs would only be a 1st and 3rd, and if the Jets kept the player by league rules they could not trade him for 12 months.

PLD is not a rookie. he has been in the league for 6 years and has never scored 30 goals in a season. He has complained and threatened every team he has played for. He has a record of injuries. He is not a superstar. I would take him but not give up the ship to get him.

Two issues for Hugo: 1) what do you give up for PLD; and 2) what term and price? This could be Drouin 2.0 in the making: 3rd overall pick who plays centre and a bit of a malcontent with his current team. While he's already achieved way more than Drouin, we will be paying him way more than $5.5 million and perhaps giving up more than Sergechev and a conditional second rounder. I'm reaching for my support dolls.
