Peohling articleHe's always had some tools that merited a first round pick but he's never been able to effectively or consistently use them.

Thanks for sharing, IaC. Given how prospect poor Pittsburgh has been for a decade, I imagine they are relatively excited about him since he possesses good wheels, solid size, and some versatility. However, the dude's skill set screams bottom six. Poehling should be able to score a little more than he has shown thus far if he stays healthy and focuses on grinding down low. But that's about it because he really fights the puck and lacks offensive vision.

I just cant see it. He is 24 now with about 2 years worth of experience at the NHL level. He has only 20 goals so far. I think this speaks to Pittsburgh's desperation.
As an aside, that 2017 draft was quite a success for Dallas. Heiskanen, Oettinger and Robertson in the 1st 2 rounds.

Always enjoy reading up on past Habs' prospects, and that was a good read ... I remember the original hype surrounding Ryan Poehling ... he was a big, strapping kid, who was already in a man's body ... that didn't last too long, as hockey pundits were quick to point out that Poehling was projected to be a 3rd-line centre ... that was illuminating because, I was looking at him like another Ryan Kessler ... as time went on, I was hoping he'd be more like Lars Eller ... then, I saw him in Belleville (pre-Covid) for a "Rookie Showcase" that involved prospects from the Senators, Jets, and Canadiens ... other than two single-man rushes, where he lost the puck both times, Poehling was unspectacular, and barely noticeable ... still, I couldn't write him off ... I used to sometimes think how he'd have turned out had the Habs any kind of development program during his tenure with the club ... he wouldn't be the only one ...
Cheers.

That 2017 draft has ended up being a fairly deep one. Not in terms of game breakers (unless you're at the top or are Dallas), but guys who are producing at least at some level. It's discouraging looking at the guys taken right after Poehling...
Morgan Frost Henri Jokiharju Eeli Tolvanen Klim Kostin Conor Timmins Nicholas Hague
Jason Robertson came 5 picks later, but there was the usual bit of luck there as is the case when an excellent player falls that far. But those 6 I listed earlier came right after Poehling. Any one could help the Habs right now. But hey, Poehling helped us get Matheson, so there is that.
