Even with just one year left (at 4.5) I think it's going to be a tough sell.

I'm sure Hughes is happy to retain 50% of that salary in order to make a deal happen. It doesn't seem like the type of deal that would happen now though. Can't imagine that any team has adding a declining 33 year old, one dimensional, slow scorer anywhere near the top of their offseason list of priorities.

Hoffman is very much a plan C (or D) addition for a team that runs into injury problems mid-season and needs some depth scoring as insurance. Even then it's hard to imagine him getting much ice time on a contender (Kessel fits a similar profile and was scratched for all of 4 games in the Knights cup run).

There is a lot more useful things to do with 4.5 million then pay a life long perimeter player.

No one wants Hoffman at $4.5, end of story. If Montreal chews on 50 percent, he may be moveable for a 5th or 6th rounder. Unless Hughes thinks Chevaldayoff is going to circle back around and suddenly cap space has to be moved, I sort of imagine the Habs are just going to live with Hoffman until the trade deadline when he either gets dealt or sent to the press box or Laval.

Hoffman is still an above average skater even at age 33. That is not the problem. The issues are basically that he is a perimeter floater and now that he is not productive enough anymore to play a top six role, it is just tough to find a role for him.

After 10 or 20 games, some team that just isn't scoring goals might well take a flyer at 50% retained.
