If you're looking for big skilled defensemen 2008 is the year.

The reports I read said he was competitive, agile, has a great shot, and plays a good physical game for his size. He also has a good coach in K-W who speaks pretty highly of this young man. Character, another theme of this draft from Trevor and the boys.

More from Max Giese. www.sharkspage.com/2007_nhl_draftpreview.html46. D Yannick Weber, 5-11 195, 9-23-1988, Kitchener Rangers OHL 51 gp – 13 g – 28 a – 41 points. ++ Quick feet, agility + Offensive upside, hand skill and creativity. - Smallish, forces shots. Switzerland native that was one of the best offensive defenseman in the OHL this season. While he lacks in height, he doesn’t let that affect him as he’s very stocky and strong on his feet with good core strength. He lacks an explosive top gear but his all around mobility is strong as he’s a swift skater with good agility and all compass mobility. Doesn’t back down physically as he competes hard with his man one on one and is willing to throw his weight around. Weber possesses enticing offensive upside as he possesses soft hands and superb vision. He is an instinctive passer who knows where he wants to move the puck the instant he receives it. He sees the ice well and moves the puck crisply. He makes a great first pass and displays the tools to quarterback the power play as he’s creative and poised with the puck. His shot needs work as it’s often off the mark but he is a solid goal scorer from the point as he does a good job pinching in down low near the net, ala Matt Carle.

Sounds like a younger Mark Streit to me. Normally I am not a big fan of Swiss players (they have it a little too cozy over there to really make a huge effort to come here), but the fact that he IS already here speaks volumes about his desire to be in the NHL. He could have had a very cushy hockey life in Switzerland, but as a young man he has already made the decision to take the tough route to the NHL.
I like that. Not overly sure how well that will translate into actually being an NHLer down the road, but hey, it's a promising sign... Think I would have preferred the other Weber though (Will). Granted, he went 20 spots before our Weber, but what are you going to do?

Weber had 4 points for the Swiss team at the WJC this past year, and the team only scored 13 goals in total. He was named as one of the top three players by the coaches. It is his second WJC appearance and he is eligible again next year. Only misses being eligible for a fourth in 2009 by a couple of months. My pick as the "sleeper" pick out of this draft for the Habs. He has more of a physical edge than Streit, and has a more complete game at the comparative age. He should turn out to be a little bigger as well.
