The return is for a 2024 3rd round pick and 2024 7th round pick.

Opens a roster spot but a little underwhelming when there were whispers of a 1st or 2nd rounder last trade deadline.
Also we are retaining 1 750 000 M salary

I always liked Edmundson -- big, team guy, opponents wary to mess around when he's on the ice. But with the bad back, the return that could have been at the deadline got sabotaged, though at least he still yielded a positive asset.
Hughes sees the serious logjam on the blue line and had to do something. And it would have been premature to trade a kid because I think management and coaches need more time to evaluate everyone.

Agree. Hughes has 4 guys I think he needs to move.
Hoffman Armia Dvorak Allen
I know this isn't happening (term, age, assets to acquire) but I wonder how a hellybuck would do in Montreal.

I think the back injury history impacted the value teams were willing to part with, and this also speaks to the timing of the deal. Hughes definitely wanted to avoid a repeat of last season where his top trade chips were rendered useless due to injury.
It also opens up a spot to ensure the young guys get more ice time with the big club. Part is developing such a young core of defenders is they need to play at the highest level at some point and learn to process the game against the best.
Eddy always came across as a great guy and very good in the room. Hope he can stay healthy and enjoy his time in Washington.
BTW, the third round pick in this deal is Minnesota’s. The 7th is Washington’s.

I assume the Habs paid the $2M US signing bonus so it only costs the caps $1.1875M but they get $1.75M cap hit.
Eddy was a good habs, best of luck to him with the Caps

Also we are retaining 1 750 000 M salary The reality of what a guy is worth on the open market vs what fans think they’re worth often varies, especially for someone who has had recent injuries. Good guy, but an obstacle to the kids if he stayed.

A bit of a dump because we have a log jam of young guys.
At best he was going to fetch a 2nd at TDL so it's not much of an asset loss.

This also frees up a contract spot without taking one back. In his last few pressers, Hughes has mentioned a concern about not having enough contract spots a few times now. In addition to opening up a LHD where there are lots of prospects fighting for some NHL exposure on their “natural” side, this move has some other benefits.

Given the re-signing of Monahan and the acquisition of Newhook, I am surprised that Hoffman's agent did not get 'unfortunately your client is being bought out' call from Hughes. The buyout would not have been that onerous compared to guys with 2 or more years remaining on their contracts. And the Habs just have a glut of forwards under contract even when you assume guys like Pitlick, Roy, and Farrell will play in Laval.
At the very least I think management and St. Louis are going to be sitting down in September with a number of vets to explain that unlike 2022-23 where the organization and St. Louis went out his way to show respect to vets like Dadanov, Hoffman, Drouin, and Armia (and actually no vets ever got demoted to Laval), this season could be a different story right off the hop.

I think they'd rather bite the bullet with Hoffman now rather than have his cap hit still on the books, in any way, in 24-25. But if everone is healthy, he'd be great AHL depth...

For sure, I agree, I think that is the essence of it.
But one or two guys are getting the uncomfortable call to the GM's office hearing the message 'hey sorry, you are on waivers' (and no one is going to claim you) because right now the number of forwards under contract is genuinely problematic: 1) Suzuki; 2) Caufield; 3) Anderson; 4) Gallagher; 5) Hoffman; 6) Dvorak; 7) Armia; 8) Dach; 9) Evans; 10) Pezzetta; 11) Newhook; 12) Monahan; 13) Slafkovsky; 14) Harvey-Pinard; 15) Ylonen.
And this head count assumes that kids like Farrell and Roy have no chance to make to the Habs roster, as well as a tweener like Pitlick being Laval-bound.

We can sort them though Long-term plan: 1, 2, 8, 11, 13 Useful kids we'd rather keep, but not core: 9, 10, 14, 15 Bad contracts we would eject into the moon if possible:4, 5, 7 Useful filler, possibly rented out at deadline:12 Useful but overpaid real NHLers who we should move when we get a decent offer that doesn't hurt the future: 3, 6 If we're going to hurt someone's ego, it should be someone like Hoffman or Armia.
