All quiet on the Western, Eastern, Southern and Northern fronts today. Brandon Gignac, the terror of the AHL scored the first goal with assists to Savard and Jared Davidson (woohoo!). Then Slaf scored with assists to Dach and a guy Skilly has promised us will never play in the NHL, William Trudeau. 2-2 tie.

4-3 win, eh? Sounds good. I was scrambling getting off work latish and had to run my son to his team's first preseason game 30 miles out of town. Honestly I forgot the Habs were playing, let alone against the fashionable Ottawa Senators who won the summer of 2022 and are apparently a near lock for the playoffs this season.
I have not even watched the highlights yet, but what is everyone's impression of Primeau. I have always had a soft spot for him and think with the long development trajectory for goalies that he could still turn out to be an effective #2 in the league. DeSmith is gone. Management is committed to Montembeault and Allen, apparently. So I guess it will just be a roll of the dice on placing Primeau on waivers.

For me, biggest take away was Slafs scoring. He needs to feel he can play well. I know it's only exhibition against mostly AHL players, but if he can't play well and score in these games then he will spiral.
Glad Cole and Suze are doing their thing even in exhibition.

He only got beat by a deflected shot, but I got the feeling he got lucky in a few other game situations, and it could've been worse. Sometimes he reminds me of Halak when he isn't at his most confident, somehow. He might be technically sound, he just looks small and the game seems to be going real fast for him. I don't expect to lose Primeau to waivers... but I would be worried about sending him back down during the season, more so if he had a few good NHL games before being sent back down.

More of the game. There was a time a few years ago when the entire game was posted. Oh well...
Can make much of a comment because watching tiny segments of it means very little.

Thanks Cranky. It's not the whole game, but you can pick up things from it. There were quite a few instances of us being pressured by Ottawa and who's that guy who seems to be on the ice in so many of those occasions? Oh, it's #58. He did not have a good game.

There's nothing that lifts your spirits like a good hug. I suspect the Sheriff might have introduced McEwan to some knuckles.
If the NHL had any guts (laughs uproariously), they would fine any team that ices a thug line-up, instead of breaking open the champagne when one does that. Ottawa gained bugger all from that game. They are no further ahead in their assessments after that game than they were before the game. They had one goal in mind...hope that someone on the Habs was injured. All you have to do is tell those thugs that they have a chance at making the team IF, IF, they show enough 'grit' and 'jam' against the Habs. No need to tell anyone to go out and injure someone. You have effectively done that.
How do you combat that if you are truly interested in gauging what you have? You need to play guys who actually do have a chance to play. Mostly, of course. Gignac, bourque and Keeper are not going to be in the regular line-up unless we have 30 injuries.
Heatherington, Toure, Kastelic, Sokolov, Kelly, Imama, Sebrango, Reinhart and Chartier are either AHL'rs, ECHL'rs or thugs. That's 9 guys compared to our 3. A million dollar fine would look after that nicely. Chuckle. When ever has the NHL done the right thing?

This is why I want training camps down to 3 games and say a roster size of 50 (whatever the amount it takes to fill up two teams)

You can intimidate the thugs if you demolish one of them.
Always, ALWAYS. ALWAYS true that the only thing bullies are afraid of is bigger bullies that can re-arrange them. That was true from high school and all the way to the level of international relationships. When Americans invaded Iraq, the mullahs were putting out feelers for "peace".
