Newhook is starting to remind me of Domi. Lots of skating around but at the end of the game, not much to show for it.

Turning point was the goal on Allen without his stick. Are these guys professionals? I was always taught that when your goalie loses his stick it is imperatrive you get it back for him. Now that may be risky and difficult when you're hemmed in, but when Nick was able to clear the zone, the first thng the dmen (Guhle and Barron) should be doing is getting Allen his stick. It's tough enough when you can't match up to the skill level of the opponent, but being dumb is inexcusable. I believe there’s some rule preventing another player, other than the goalie, retrieving their own stick. If you play it you get a penalty. Just another dumb rule by the NHL.

I'm pretty sure that rule does not apply to a goalie losing their stick. It may be that you cannot be holding two sticks at the same time, but nothing preventing a player from pushing a stick with their skate or stick back to the goalie crease.

So how did Slaf look? I saw he had 10 shots in the game. How did they look as a line?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think he's improving by the game. His shot gets blocked too often, but his passing is excellent and I think he's getting more comfortable with the pace of the league. The potential is still there. He has a strong shot, so the next step is getting it on net. His vision is already better than average, IMO. He's close and a couple of goals may well have him breaking out.

Thought he may have had his best game as a Hab against the Canucks - probably our most natable forward.

So how did Slaf look? I saw he had 10 shots in the game. How did they look as a line? Meh The stats say his expected goals percentage was 62%. The way that stat is read is 50% means you’re just as likely to score as be scored upon. So 62% is good, real good. It means that when Slaf is on the ice the probability of MTL scoring is higher than being scored against Slaf was -2 Yeah. Expected goals. Expected goals percentage, all that mumbo-jumbo of trying to get more baseball type stats for the American fan base means squat. He was expected to get more goals for , but actually got scored against more?? Explain that one to me You don’t draft a 1OA forward for board work and looking good. You draft him for points. That’s how I will judge him

This game's plus/minus is a little deceptive given there were two empty net goals against the Habs. Know Slafs was on for one, maybe both. Bottom line is he had some great chances and was earning his chances. I'm in the camp that says he's developing!

Slaf was the games 3rd star. That's because we're looking for anything positive from him. While thinking about this, I speculated on the fact articles could be written about how some guys (Keith Tkachuk, Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Jeff Skinner etc) can put up a lot of points and win awards, yet their teams never seem to win anything. Someone should make it their PhD thesis. I'd read it.

The biggest positive about Slaf, in my opinion, is the resilience he's shown. His bad games have been REALLY bad... as in looking completely broken. To see him go from rock bottom to possibly his best game in the NHL in such a short amount of time is impressive. And at 19 years old no less. To make it through that adversary tells me that he can have a career in Montreal.
Price was another player whose rock bottom period was painfully low (in 2009 iirc). But he made it through, and I'm convinced that getting through that adversity made him a stronger player and person. Price was 21 at the time.
I'm still not convinced that Slaf will be the best player from his draft class, but I think the Habs were right in their assessment of his mental strength. I can say for sure that 54 games into his career that he's reading plays infinitely better than when he first came to North America. But he's not out of the woods yet... he still needs to execute MUCH better.

The other point I have to keep reminding myself about is that for big kids, there's often a disconnect between, I dunno, their muscles and their nervous system. It seems to take time for their neural messages to catch up to their muscles (or vice versa), so they often look awkward and goofy. This is typically accompanied by things like, falling down too easily, mis-timing passes or shots and just generally not being connected. It usually works itself out with time. I think Kotkaniemi experienced much the same stuff as he now seems more solid than he was at 18/19 and he certainly doesn't fall down anymore. Both these guys had to go through the language shift and the ice size difference too, not to mention the much faster pace of the NHL in comparison to their previous leagues. It appears this Habs management is willing to have a lot more patience with Slaf and there's no way they're not matching any offer sheet (which won't happen because Slaf will be extended long before any offer sheet is possible). It's no use going over spilt milk, but man....Sooooooo many very dumb decisions taken in those last years.

Most of the big bodied forwards that I can think of took some time to break out, and sometimes even took a while to make it to the NHL. None looked more awkward than Kotkaniemi... remember the Zadorov hit that put him out? Yeesh. But that version of Kotkaniemi is a thing of the past. He can lay the body now and has delivered a few highlight hits in the past couple of years. Completely different player physically speaking.

KK is on pace for 30 goals and 35 assists this year... isn't that what we wanted from him but he wasn't given the time to grow... he's 23 and becoming the player we hoped he would be when he was drafted

I just think they could have some slush category where the individual points could go. A team could play with no goalie the whole game and lose 83 - 1. There would be no individual points other than the losing team's one goal. Call it Ponzi Ponzi and he gets all the EN points. Each team could have one slush player.
