Glad they got this done. If the Habs anticipate being competitive in the next few years they’ll need two capable goalies, and Monty has shown he can be one of them.

I think this is fair. Montembeault has been a rare bright spot & turned out well for a waiver pickup.

This is a fair deal from the AAV perspective and this is a really good deal from the standpoint of the term involved.

Decent enough to be our backup for 25 games a year... now who to start?

The problem is there are hardly any goalies good enough to start two-thirds of their teams games in the contemporary NHL. That is just how the league is now. So management must see Montembeault as a guy capable of starting 40 per season. He has really been good this season (.910 and top third goals saved above expected), which is saying something when one considers he backstops a group that totally lacks discipline and strong team defensive fundamentals.
Management really needs to figure out when the expiration date is on the three goalies situation. I get it that Hughes probably wanted to see how desperate Edmonton might get. But nonetheless I think is is borderline goofy to go all the way to the trade deadline with three goalies.

This may be the time to consider Monty not as a stopgap till Fowler arrives, but as an asset to move in a market where several teams are seeing their goaltending as a hurdle to their SC aspirations. Edmonton, Ottawa (playoffs), Carolina and probably one or two others (LA?). I keep looking at Ottawa's box scores and they're outshooting the opposition, but a .750 save percentage (like Korpisale tonight vs Columbus) is killing them. Would they be willing to give up say, Ridley Greig, for Monty plus an LHD from our lower ranks (Norlinder, Lundstrom) or Colorado's second round pick this year if they drive a hard bargain?

Korpisalo has four additional years at $4 AAV. So unfortunately for the Sens they did not ask him out on a date, they got married. Plus, crazy as it sounds given the Melnyk years, nowadays the Sens are a cap team so they dollar in dollar out for any move to be made.
Fowler seems like an intriguing goalie prospect. But given the weird nature of the position, it is just so hard to project. I guess my feeling on goalies is simply that they take so long to develop and hone their craft, Fowler may literally not be NHL ready until 2027, assuming he gets there.
Hockey is debatable. And I have no idea how Hughes plans to manage his assets in net. However, now it feels somewhat more likely that Montembeault is not a trade chip.

I had serious reservations about Primeau and he's done nothing to dispel them.
I'd keep Monty and Allen because it can and WILL get worse. Can't motivate a team that is constantly losing by 5 goals. You simply make losing normal.
So unless we are getting a kings ransom for Monty, meaning at least a 1st, NO

Matheson and chaosevic are the scariest things on ice in the D zone... that screws 2 out of the 3 D pairings every game... another problem is whoever is working with the D (Robidas I think) should be fired, he has implemented no structure back there, along with the special teams guy Burrows who is costing us games
