We shouldn’t get cocky. It was just the Avs.

Good things happen when you work hard... nothing bad to say tonight. I would've been okay with a loss because the boys actually worked hard and competed

Pleased that Slaf and Caufield both scored. That’s better for me than the win.

Pleased that Slaf and Caufield both scored. That’s better for me than the win. Suze was key to both goals. He had a great game at both ends. He always seems to rise to the occassion when playing top centres: McD and Mac. Armai and Allen with strong games. HuGo should be sending the video of the game to the 31 other gms. Don't think i've everseen Armia so happy or or jovial

Game management by the refs, rhp gets a stick to the face, no call... avs player snaps his head back on a reverse hit by Harris and its elbowing It is crazy how Mcd and McK can do no wrong in the refs eyes and Evans is called on everything. Don't know if people noticed the linesman accidentally got Evans stick in the eart on a face-off and he was not happy. He was actually cursing and yelling at Evans as they got set for the next face-off, and surprise surprise he kicks Evans out of the face-off.

He also grabbed the puck out of the other linesman's hand when he seemed to tell him "I'll drop this one". He never even acknowledged him, just snatched the puck from his hand as if to say "GTF, I'm having words with him"

Being average is the goal for Caufield, and as that coverage showed, he's not there yet. Oh well, he did score.

There was nothing wrong with Cole's coverage on the 4 on 4 goal, he was between the player and the net as Raantanen was moving behind the net, a pass came out to toews and he shot the puck, it hit Struble and went in, what was Cole supposed to do, Cole actually looked towards the blueline to see if and Avs were coming in. Go to the 8:20mark

Dave poulin was the best modern day colour guy to do english habs games imo

Go to the 8:20mark We obviously had different hockey coaches. It was 4 on 4 and the Habs were palying man on man. Cole should have stayed with his man, Rantanen. Cole for some reason backs off looking to cover the Oiler at the point who was being covered by Guhle. This forced Struble to play his man and Rantenan in case Rantanen broke for the net which he was able to do as Cole had backed off. That goal was on Cole. He should stick with his man.

We'll agree to disagree, I think they are both to blame.. But Cole was about as close to Rantaanen as struble was to Toews, why wasn;t struble closer to Toews if they are playing man defence? The puck did go off of Struble, block the puck or get out of the way. Also if cole went after Raantanen, he would have gone around the net and come out free and clear, where cole was he could have cut in front of the net to intercept him. oh well better 1 point than 2 for this year anyways.

Can't understand why Cole stops going with Rantanen, backs off and leaves himself covering no one? It basically bacame a 2 on 1 on Struble.

I was going to say something similar. Essentially, Caufield gave Rantanen WAY too much space. You have to be closer so you can get your stick in the way and have a chance to deflect a pass. Cole's gap was poor given how far he let himself drift. No way he's going to body Rantanen, so that option is out, but a pass deflection is the goal and Caufield had no hope of that. I'm less critical of Struble. He was caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. If he goes out to Toews, Rantanen can cut across the front of the net unimpeded. Struble has to position himself for that possibility, which means giving Toews too much space. When one guy doesn't position himself properly, it drags teammates out of their positions and then everyone's gambling.

More MSL wisdom... The Leafs management should listen Bergevin used to talk all the time about that 'character' thing, but that might be another case of talk being cheap, one thing he was excellent at. The difference between he and HuGo is that HuGo understand that talent has to go along with character to produce a winning team. Reinbacher seems to be a lightning rod for HuGo criticism this year. Reinbacher's faced starting the season with a knee injury and then his team sucks big time, so he's put in the position of facing the other team's best players at 18/19 years of age, trying to cover for teammates who aren't good enough and the pressure of relegation. There may even be financial pressures. Who knows? But no one is questioning the kid's character. It's going to sound silly, but when a comparison comes up, the guy I see as have a very similar style is Nik Lidstrom. This is not me saying we drafted another Nik Lidstrom, but we did draft a good skating defenseman who moves the puck well, and defends well, with good spacing and stick control. Reinbacher's a boring defenseman. You don't see him going end to end, but I don't recall seeing Lidstrom do much of that either. If Reinbacher can get the puck through to the net and create rebounds the way Lidstrom did, we'll have a very good defenseman on our team. One of the 'character' signs I look for is a player's reaction when he scores a goal. Does he thump his chest, play up to the crowd and basically trumpet "see how great I am?", or does he point to the guy that passed the puck to him and yell out 'great pass". Remember Slaf's reaction after his goal against the Avs?....pointing right to Suzuki. Spread the love, baby, don't look inward. Now, sometimes, a guy does do it all on his own and then it's ok to preen a little.
