All right, Super Bowl Sunday. I have to admit I am not an avid follower of American football, but this is always a fun weekend.
Killer, talk about a guy with both the highest end skill and grit in spades.
The Blues are hanging on right there in the final wildcard spot, so they should be motivated. Binnington is going to start. Their d-corps is getting old in the tooth, maybe if the Habs transition quick and keep coming for a full game those tired legs could start to weigh.
Is Allen starting against his old team? I would be shocked if he does not. With Harvey-Pinard out and Gallagher still suspended, will Hughes call up someone from Laval or just dress seven d-men?

Allen has been terrible since the day we got him. This organization s**t the bed when it came to replacing Price.
I still say they should have traded him 5 years ago when he was still considered on top of his game. It was the only way to try to start the rebuild

I assume that 1st goal was the 1st shot of the game?

I wonder what Armstrong is going to do at the TDL? The Blues aren't really contenders, despite their recent streak. They don't have a Ryan O'Rielly or anyone close to that 2019 Blues team (which was something of an outlier, anyway. Their goaltending is fickle and unlikely to carry them through a 22 game playoff grind. Rob Thomas has a good future, but he's not there yet. I guess they'll count on the kinds coming like Dvorsky, Lindstein and Stenberg, if they turn out. Snuggerud is a good pick and he should arrive next season. Krug, Parayko, Leddy, Scandella, Faulk, all will need to be replaced and soon. There isn't much in the pipeline on the defenseman side. Lindstein is not exactly setting the world on fire in Sweden and Brynas sent him back to their juniour team. Still, he only just turned 19.
The Blues have generally been a good scouting team, though, so there may be more there than I'm aware of. That's a deep, old folk's home to climb out of though.

Not that I want to sing Bergevin's praises, but picking up Montembeault was a stellar move. Allen was solid, not great but solid win years 1-2 in Montreal. Unfortunately, he was poor last season and this season it is hard to get a read on what's the issue because he plays rather infrequently.
The boys were low energy and unfocused right out of the room this afternoon. Tough to see Harris get rocked like that. For sure, he was falling down and Blais did not let up. That huge Russian kid is giving Struble fits out there.

That huge Russian kid is giving Struble fits out there. Allen's getting a lot of flak, (likely deservedly), but Marc Dumont, who keeps us up to date on some stats, says that Allen's expected goals against is 10th in the NHL per 60 minutes at 5 v 5. Monty is 18th. Now one can argue that stat till the cows come home. It doesn't include PP's and last I looked they still call penalties in the NHL. A goalie earns their salary on the PK. My eye test tells me I'd much rather have Monty in goal than Allen. I suspect a lot of GM's feel that way. No one has jumped on him because while he might be better than what they currently have, he doesn't move the needle enough to make a sufficient difference. I bet Primeau gets traded and we finish up Jake's contract through next year.

Hard to know, seventeen. If management really likes Primeau, Allen may find himself on waivers after the deadline or when camp breaks in the fall. Jack Campbell can attest to how the NHL is not about protecting goalies' feelings.
I think Allen has no trade value right now without retention. Retaining half, someone needing a vet backup will give Hughes a mid rounder. Though Hughes would have to consider if that, say, a fourth round pick is worth tying up a retention slot for 2024-25 because in reality the difference in the cap hit between the trading/retaining alternative ($1.925) and the waiving/burying alternative (approx. $2.65) is less than a million dollars.

How was that not a tripping call on Walker for taking out CC’s legs.

How was that not a tripping call on Walker for taking out CC’s legs. Each day, the NHL HO sends out an email to all refs, reminding them that teams lower in the standings always take more penalties than those above them and embellish far more than those above them. Referees should not allow themselves to be fooled into thinking a bad team has good players. Every day.

Is this a game that suggests the opposition would be less aggressive with Arber in the line-up?

Matheson mishandled the puck at the blueline twice when the team was swarming. One ending in a breakaway with him taking a penalty.
I’m not a big Matheson fan. I hope teams make offers on him cause he does this 4 times a game and gets a pass because of his points

Is this a game that suggests the opposition would be less aggressive with Arber in the line-up? Yes. We’re getting pushed around out there and could definitely use the sheriff. Also, we need someone like Anderson to step up and star wallpapering guys. If he’s not going to contribute offensively he’s got to do something out there. The guy is invisible.

He's one of those guys who makes flashy plays, and everyone ignores the simple stuff on which he executes poorly. He also is having a very impressive year and has a lot of value at this point. There is no way, however, that Hughes trades him now. Marty loves him and along with the fact he has some utility, negates any trade possibilities. If, somehow, Hughes does trade him this summer, I'll pin "the Gutsiest GM" ribbon on him. That would take courage, but I think would be an overall positive move. He'd get a lot for him and it frees up LHD space for Hutson who can replace his offense and be smarter in the defensive zone.
