Montreal could try trading Yanic Perrault for Stu Barnes, and throw in a swap of Richard Zednik for Steve Ott.

Why in the heck would you trade a 30-goal scorer for a 4th line player in Ott? Are u on crack?

Forget about the Ott for Zednik part, for sure... but the barnes for perrault would be fine by me. Barnes has had four good playoff runs, is versatile (can play all three forward positions) and I think has a smaller salary than perreault.

Barnes for Perreault would be a great trade, but with the Stars headed for the playoffs, I don't see them making this move since Barnes is a much more versatile player than Perreault. He has an element of grit to him, he can score and he can fill in aptly on a checking line. With a 51.8% on faceoffs, Barnes is no pushover on draws either.
If Gainey is able to unload Perreault, I don't think he could do more than getting a mid-to-late round draft pick. Rather than recieve that kind of a return, with the Habs headed to the playoffs, I would rather hold on to Perreault. His faceoff prowess will be needed in the postseason, and he is good insurance in case of injuries.

Perreault has shown pretty good character, not complaining or making any kind of a fuss, even when reporters tried to dig out something controversial, so we know he can accept not being in the limelight.

Barnes could be had in a package deal (realizing that Perrault's value is limited).
The trade breaks down like this.
Barnes 34, 5'11 180 pds plays C/LW/RW, and is right handed which will help for Centre position. Has 9 goals and 12 assists and is +-0.
and
Ott 22, LW/C 6'1 199 pounds, 2 goals, 10 assists for 12 points +- 0.
in exchange for
Perreault 10 goasl 10 assists for 20 points. C, 5'11 185 pounds and 32, minus 8.
Zednik RW/LW, 6'0 200 pounds 27, 20 goals 17 assists for 37 points and a plus 7.
This trade makes sense for Montreal and Dallas. Dallas gets two players now that will help them in the playoffs, a good face off centreman and a goal scorer.
Montreal gets an excellent all around player in Barnes, who can play all the positions and is right handed for the Centre position. Plus a very young player (who maybe playing fourth line know), but was part of the Spezza/Ott combo in Windsor. Ott is a prototype power forward and will pay off with time. Zednik has been suspetable to concussions, and will start to plateau.

I am with you on this one. Yanic has been very grateful to get a chance on the first line with Bulis injured and was very respectful talking about it with media in the interview that I recently read. He mentioned that he will relish playing with two talented players like Saks and Zed and that it will be a different role than what was expected of him on the 4th line. He is playing whatever role is asked of him and playing within his means (read to mean that he never will be the perfect two-way guy that some would like to see emerge from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix).

Zednik has been suspetable to concussions, and will start to plateau. Barnes, while effective, isn't cheap enough. Stu wouldn't get minutes above the third line. His salary is the same as Perreault's, and is one more reason not to get him. The days of paying checkers premium coin is nearly over. BG isn't going to trade for a $2.8m dollar checker. Begin, and fodder, will do just fine. I fail to understand the logic in the Ott/Zednik swap. We'd be trading a perrenial 25-30g man for a pest. Ott has talent, but I don't envision him as a dynamic offensive threat. The Habs struggle enough to find goals, trading one of our best goal scorers for someone who might develop into 20g/40p man doesn't make sense to me. Any trade of Zednik would bring equal value in return. This proposal doesn't even come close.

We can debate and toss ideas around without this kind of talk.

It would be foolish of Montreal to trade Zednik in any deal. Any deal involving Zednik, even if it brings equal or greater value, does not solve our immediate problem. That problem being we have a third line or fourth line player on our first line!
So if we trade Zednik and get the next coming of Gretzky we would still be left with
Koivu, great player , and no one to go with them.
Koivu and Zednik make each other tick.

Perreault has a no trade clause and is a UFA at the end of the season....
