Slovakia defeats US 5-4 in OT. No points for Slaf, though.
In the Finland game, IIHF stats have taken a goal away from Kapanen. He's show with just 2 goals, not three. I don't think I would trust IIHF stats. I have noticed in other situations where they didn't credit the correct player. I think in an early game, they took away a goal from Slaf and turned it into an assist. Yet you watch the replay and yup, Slaf scored. Weird. They're often wrong on deflections.

Who says Guhle has no offensive ability? Assisted on Canada's first goal and scored Canada's second in a 6-1 game after 2 periods. Pierre Luc Dubois has the all important 6th goal for Canada.

Naturally, as soon as I slag Dubois his 6th goal turns out to be a tying goal and he assists on the 7th goal in OT in a goofy 7-6 win over Austria. Binnington or Hofer llgave up 6 goals on 21 shots, a .714 save %.
Looked at the OT replay and PLD passed to Tavares at the red line, John carried it in, deked a dman to give himself space and picked the far corner to win it. Nothing special from Dubois. Took 15 seconds to dash Austria’s hopes. Might have been a lot of beer flowing last night.

I watched a little of this game & I'm pretty sure it was Binnington in goal.
I wonder about the Olympics & who will play goal for Canada. Binnington, Skinner? Scary to think about.

He was also the goat on the tying 6th Austrian goal, handing the puck to Rossi in the final minute. He scored 3 points and finished a -1 on the game. He's been let loose to roam as he pleases. He was regularly pinching, behind the net, wayyy to low at times. I hope he doesn't pick up any bad habits on a team that is led on the first line by Tavares and PLD.

Binnington was hung out to dry waaaay too much. He didn't make the big saves but Austria was playing the counter attack well. Canada would carry the play but virtually everybody seemed to be playing high risk. They should tighten up against stiffer competition. Roght? Right?. Canadian Olympic Goaltending has been a concern for some time now. I keep waiting for a star to emerge but maybe a Logan Thompson is type is a possibility. Seems like Canada doesn't even have a goalie that would crack USA's top 5.

Yeah I would say Logan Thompson as well. Other scary options:
Jake Allen Samuel Montebault Stuart Skinner Jordan Binnington Conner Ingram (Utah) Adin Hill Devon Levi Tristian Jarry Darcy Kemper Marc Andre Fleury (Can he last that long?)

I've been folllowing on box scores, and obviously miss the other facts of the game. Tourigny's not a bad coach, but typically of Canadian national teams, no one's' played with each other, they're trying to pick up a new system, so there are bound to be a lot of errors until they smooth it out. Hope it's soon as an OT win over Austria is nothing to be proud of.

He backstopped our U18 team to Gold and might have been the prime reason they won it. Reminiscent of Price. (In style)

My pick would be Adin Hill. At least he's huge and has come up big at the right time. That's still a poor selection. Sam might be a top contender.

I don't think any of them are better than Oettinger, Demko, Swayman, Hellebuyck or even Quick. No, we're going through a cycle where our goaltenders are weak. If you watched Carter George at the U18's, he was the best goalie in the tournament and, all things going well, should be Canada's Next One.

Watching Canada/ Czechia. Canada gives up 2 goals with the Czech net empty- one on a PP after a careless penalty by Mercer. Now 3-3 and into OT.

Watching Canada/Slovakia. IMO Tavares looks a lot more engaged than he did in the Bruins series.

To European players, this is their Stanley Cup. You often see players who are so-so in the playoffs, become demons in the IIHF WC. The commitment that is lacking in the Stanley Cup, is amplified at the WC. I wonder if, at some time, the Stanley Cup will not be the top prize it is considered today? It may be just another league championship. That might dampen some franchise values.

Catching Sweden Finalnd, in the first. Nice example by Kapanen of not panicking. Sweden had been cycling for a while in the Finn end. Kapanen stayed with his man in front, tied him up in case a pass was made to him, eventually won a board battle with that guy against the side boards, got the puck out himself and accelerated into the Swedish end to start a cycle there. Lots of good basic stuff by a 20 year old.
Later he had some good control offensively, carrying in the Swedish zone, and making a nice pass to an open dman for a chance on goal. Kapanen has some chops.

Canada loses the semi to the Swiss. They came from 2-0 down to the it late but lose in the shootout.
Not sure why but 2 D man were used ( Severson & Power) , neither guy scored.

To his credit, Powers hit the post. Then again, if he had been a better break away goal scorer, he might have put it in. Sometimes, using a Dman can make sense because the goalie hasn't seen him before, but in this tournament no one has seen anyone before.
From a distance, I would have used Bedard, Tavares, Mangiapane, Guenther, McCann and repeated, using Bedard as often as possible. Bedard is Bedard. Tavares is a goal scorer and had a good tournament. Mangiapane is a breakaway guy. Guenther is a goal scorer and McCann has one of the best wrist shots in the NHL. My 2 bits. Tourigny disagreed and he should know more.
