Good. Let them find their own GM without trying to poach one from another team.

Friedeman also said Montreal did not give permission to Columbus to talk to them, but this might be a rehash of what came up weeks (months?) ago. I can't imagine being told to eff off that Columbus would come back again. This time, pull out the baseball bat. If I'm Molson, though, I'd be talking to Gorton about an extension and maybe a 1% equity position in the franchise.

I understand allowing an employee to speak to a competitor to allow the employee to advance such as an assistant coach moving teams to become a head coach. That's the honourable thing to do. But why would Mtl allow CJB to scoop Gorton when the only incentive for Gorton is a bigger salary. No way Gorton who is a hockey guy would rather be in Columbus than Mtl. I actually think CJB is being quite obnoxious in this. Let them talk to Josh's agent for a return to CJB, and they don't have to give us anything.

I hope the Habs are as nice on the phone as i am. I keep the cursing down to no more the half a sentence and it normally involves animals...
WHY would Molson listen? There is a perfectly good former GM put there that should be a slam dunk. Easy to find too in LA doing some dumpster diving.

In what world does the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Montreal Canadiens make less money than the General Manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets? And, I'd assume, Jeff Gorton left the General Manager of the New York Rangers to get more money in Montreal. I'd also assume he makes more money than the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. If Gorton is enticed, I doubt it's by money. It would be by unfettered control and direction in building his own team. Which is likely not what he had in NY or MTL. We all know how much the Dolans and Molsons like to have things run by them

I didn't think Gorton left NY for an opportunity in Montreal. I thought Dolan fired him.

Since I believe the GM is too busy to add scouting to their itinerary, except for high picks in the first round, I’ll lay the credit for most if those guys on Timmins’ feet. The extreme example of a GM , and maybe an owner, interfering is the Louis Leblanc pick when Timmons had Kreider next on his list but politics got in the way.

The only tome he’d be involved in a hockey decision if it’s a contract matter and he had to approve a large amount.

Yeah I also see Geoff Molson as a hands off kind of owner. The GM has had pretty much fee reign exceeding the cap with LTIR, buyouts and retained salary. The only time I have heard of an intervention was the PK Subban deal.

I am sure that Gorton is quite well compensated in his current position. And I thought the reason that he was sold on coming on board in Montreal related, at least in part, to his desire to step back a little from the daily grind of occupying the GM chair.
Kekalainen made a whole bunch of questionable decisions his tenure in Columbus. Heaven help that organization if they make Bergevin their next GM.

Ancient Spartan saying (I just made up)... never interfere when your enemy is dumpster diving or stealing your wooden swords.Smart people those Spartans despite running around with short skirts and big swords...

That is funny. You are not wrong, my friend. I was secretly hoping many months ago that Ottawa would hire Bergevin.
Although I honestly wonder about Bergevin's likelihood of getting another gig. Remember how quite a few hockey pundits opined when the last iteration of Therrien got fired in Montreal that hey Mike has a ton of experience along with a nice winning percentage, plus a few rounds of playoff series wins in his career so he will probably land on his feet soon enough. Well, funny how that worked out, because he never did. I kind of get the same vibe about Bergevin.

Well, funny how that worked out, because he never did. I kind of get the same vibe about Bergevin. MT was old school, both in the way he coached and the way he treated players. And he wasn't very good at it. Teams are much more advanced in understanding players and and the need to have a relatable coach. Even Babcock who was a good coach simply can't adjust to the changing times. As for the CBJ approach, the only time a team would let their gm talk to aother team is if they are not happy with their gm and would just assume let the other team take the contract off their hands. Molson ain't in that postion. In fact, Gorton has done a good job with the rebuild and is liked and respected. Perhaps CBJ should try their luck with the leafs and Shanahan

Columbus is a team I would definitely target as a trade partner. So many things they do and have done indicates a franchise that's always ready to make a mistake. Kent Johnson is highly skilled, but not that big. I'd like Cole Sillinger who I think will be a top 6 guy. Maybe not on our eventual team, but isn't that a good thing, having a top 6 guy on the 3rd line?

I think Columbus rushed Sillinger into the league. Playing an 18 year pivot on a brutal team seemed kind of dopey on their part. It is not like this kid was a top five talent in his draft year. He would have benefited from marinating in the W or the NCAA. And he is Mike Sillinger's son, so Cole probably had it in his DNA from day one in Columbus to prioritize his defensive conscience. Now I am just not sure what he is because while the kid does have a nice wrister, he just does not display of whole lot of creativity in the o-zone.
My hunch would be John Davidson and Columbus still like Sillinger but probably have adjusted expectations to some extent. Maybe they are simply happy to have a third line center like him. Fantilli and Jenner are their 1-2 for the next couple of seasons. I would imagine the new GM is probably inclined to give it a year to evaluate Johnson and get a read on where his development is headed.
