Rumours are that Michkov will terminate his Russian contract.
That is miles from one of the reason he wasn't drafted by us. If Rein is not top 4 material, it's on Hughes.
Moving on...it may be the right time to make a deal for Farabee and Frost. That kind of deal jumps us in the development curve.
5th isn't going to give us a superstar, maybe not even a star. Lindstrom ceiling is generally seen as topping of at 2C. And that is IF he develops that high. Just as likely he's a 30-40 point version of Anderson Da Bull.
I know that every draft comes along with a Suez Size supertanker of hopium, but i like two egg producing chickens in hand versus that rooster in the bush.
What say you?

After Celebrini and Demidov, the superstar odds fall off quite a bit. In one scenario,if Demidov falls down to 5, we get another potential superstar. Another you ask? Of course. Slafkovsky is headed that way and IMO, will become one of them. I have compared him to Jagr from the first that I heard of him. The scoring wasn't there at the time, but the size, area of birth (the old Czechoslovakia) and reported skill. He began proving it after Christmas last year. All the things he does and can improve on, say "superstar" to me. Naturally, I'm a glass half full guy ( ) but the size and skill, temperament and driving desire to improve are all superstar characteristics. So, even if Demidov doesn't fall to us, we'll have a superstar and dmen capable of playing 25-30 minutes a game. What we will also have is strength up the middle and high quality depth by the time the kids mature. It'll be a well balanced team with stars in the right places, enough size, speed and character to be a serious contender. Even if we lose out of Demidov, we'll have to 'settle' for Iginla or Lindstrom or Silayev or Leshkunov. Poor us.

I think it's more than rumours. I believe I saw some announcement from SKA (?) that Michkov would be continuing his hockey career in Philadelphia next season. Frankly, I am looking forward to the fireworks. What is it that Tortorella prizes the most among his forwards? That they backcheck and block shots. What is that that you will never find in a Michkov scouting report? That he backchecks and blocks shots. He reminds me in a minor way of Ray Ferraro. Ray jokes that in a discussion with his coach (don't know which one, Ray had lots), the coach told him that Ferraro was the most dangerous man on the ice, in both Ozone and Dzone. I loved that line. Torts and Michkov. Torts will appreciate Michkov's goal scoring ability, but the defense will drive him wild. It should be an interesting situation.

As an addendum to the above, I was wondering about Michkov coming over sooner than expected. Dan Briere was on some radio interview and said, "they may never see Michkov in Philly". I was asking myself that since that is so obvious, why would he bother saying it? The answer of course, is that he was trolling. He knew the deal was set, so he was goading critics into saying, "I told you so" and then be blown out of the water.
My respect for Briere has fallen further. Philly is now run by the son of Ed Snider who was in charge during Philly's successful years. It appears to be Rocky Wirtz 2.0. Briere is looking a little iffy (the Cutter Gauthier saga) and now this remark about Michkov. The hiring of Torts, who ends up pi$$ing off every player. I wouldn't be surprised if Gauthier's primary issue was Tortorella. His group probably did their due diligence and realized he wouldn't be ideal for Gauthier's progression and ultimate revenue generating ability. I agree (if anyone gives a hoot). While Philly did come out of the fiasco with Jamie Drysdale, and injury prone RHD wasn't the best return.
Torts even got on the Sedins for not blocking shots. I'm with the Sedin's on that one. Why risk injury for something the goalie should stop? Especially when you're talking to your 2 best offensive players. They didn't shirk defensive duties (often they were on the PK), but blocking shots in general (except for scrums in front of the net, right Michael Ryder?) is a danger to your health. It's become a rite of manhood and belonging, but just ask Brendan Gallagher about forwards blocking shots.

I wanted to draft Michkov at #5 and never really understood (or believed) the rumors that he was telling teams not named the Flyers that he did not want to play for them. What the heck is Philadelphia's historical track record with Russians? How would Keith Jones and Briere have developed a personal relationship with a kid that basically no one had any access to? And why would a supposed high maintenance primadonna type kid be craving to play for John Tortorella of all people?
Anyway, the 2023 draft is water under the bridge now. All can say is if by some miracle Demidov is there and Hughes does not pick him, I will serious question Hughes and Bobrov's intelligence.
Yeah, I agree regarding Farabee. I really like him. However, I really do not think Michkov coming over would have any impact on how Philadelphia's management feels about Farabee. He just reached the 50 point plateau at age 24, so why would they be fretting over having him locked up for four more seasons at $5 million. It sounds about right for me.
I think they just muddle through this season and then see overpaid dudes like Atkinson and Johansen disappear from the roster and that is that.
Hockey is debatable. However, I have said it before, I would not give up a whole lot for Frost. For me he is a pacier version of Dvorak. He has been productive enough that he is probably going to jump into the four something AAV range this summer and that seems a little rich for a guy who does not at age 25 profile like a 2C on a playoff team.

The hook on trading our 5th for Farabbe AND Frost is that Philly gets a chance to load up on defense. Maybe we have to add one of our spare defenseman, a non issue.
I'm not making Frost the core of the trade, but rather a middle 6 that can sub as a 2C if need be. I love to think that Dach bad luck is far behind him but...
We got a boat load of low and mid 6 coming up and we may have a few surprises, but I rather have proven egg laying chickens then a lot of hopium that we are going to generate top 6 from our prospects.
As for Torts and Michkov, I call that free entertainment of the highest order. I expect 4th of July fireworks all hockey season.
Lastly, I don't believe a word coming from Philly. It is deliberate misinformation that Briere is now dispensing even more deliberately and openly. He said that "we may never see Michkov in the NHL" while negotiating with his coming over. Pure bull puck tosser that obviously was behind the Mickov rumours.
IF Hughes fell for that bull, then he's a notch lower then I thought.

My guess (only a guess because I live a zillion miles from the action) is that HuGo, Bobrov and Lapointe didn’t like the Me me me vibes coming from Michkov. I read in one scouting report that Michkov was ambivalent about backchecking or even going into his defensive zone at times. Cherry picking. Add to the mix that he’s Russian (noted for personal achievements because that’s how they’ve been paid over the years, not team success) and I agreed with HuGo when they skipped over him.
Ovechkin was like that too until Barry Trotz got through to him. Tort’s isn’t going to change Michkov. The in your face approach doesn’t work with Russians. They’ve been threatened their whole lives.
An exception was Pavel Datsyuk. Checked, made magical plays and was team first. Igor Larionov too, another favourite

One thing that i cant get past as a huge worry. Backs are like glass, if you break them you may be able to glue them together but it's never the same.
Every single 18 year old hockey player is indestructable and jus a few days from superstardom. Just ask them. IF Hughes has Lindstrom on his wish list, he better have his medical records and medical advice. As well as making sure that any "rumours" are not coming from Brier.
This draft is making me VERY nervous. Last draft was a slam dunk and had nothing to worry about because we were drafting Michkov...
