I went out with my bike this afternoon to look at a property. I'm coming back, riding off the park grass area and onto the sidewalk. Except...there is a 6 inch trough between the sidewalk and the grass, completely hidden by the tall grass. I was going slow yet the gap stops the bike dead in it's motion and i fall backwards on the ground and my head hits....a lightpole. Out like a light for about 30 seconds. I remember the falling backwards and then people rushing to help me. Nothing in between. Funny thing...last week i bought a high quality bike helmet for $100. Second most expensive helmet in Amazon. I thought it was over the top in cost...yet... Today, I'm beyond thrilled i did that. The fall backwards against the light pole, without the helmet, the minimum was cracked skull. Concussion, ambulance...who the hell knows how bad it would of been considering the helmet has a 6 inch crack in it. Every time i see bicyclist or people on a scooter without a helmet, i comment on how stupid they are without a helmet. Today, i unwillingly proved how bad it can be with one, never mind without one. Notice in the picture, there are no scrape marks, just a split. That would of been my skull... Do i have to say the obvious about riding with proper protection? Attachments:

The value of Brain buckets can not be understated. One heck of an investment. Glad it turned out.

The value of Brain buckets can not be understated. One heck of an investment. Glad it turned out. Thank you. Even at my ready to croak age I'm a pretty fast rider and the wind dries out my eyes. So I bought the helmet because it has that pop down visor like my motorcycle helmet. Not in a million years I thought a stupid trough would take me down. And on my second ride with that helmet. Tailbone, rib and shin are annoying me but thankfully I'm not showing any concussion symptoms. I don't get the mentality of the 40km ebike and powered scooter riders. No matter how good they are, something can and will happen. What are they thinking if they fall? That they are invincible? I fell at maybe 3-4 km an hour and with no helmet it could of been bad to vegetable state to even death. I'm not much of a statist, but I would make helmets mandatory on all bikes and scooter on all ages. No helmet? $500 fine and loss of vehicle. Second offense double. BTW...in Greece, they have extra hard heads and i actually saw motorcycle riders carry their helmets on their elbows, but not wear them. Including cops. The lady I hired to look after my father worked in the hospital told me that there were at least a dozen fatalities or serious head injuries a WEEK. In a town of 12,000. Bike helmets? They think you're crazy...so I wore one and tried to find a t-shirt that acknowledged that I was... Crazy Canuck.

Glad you're still here!!
In my younger days I used to race motocross, I bought a brand new helmet that was painted by Troy lee Designs. Cost me over $800, which was a lot of money back then. Anyways my first race with it on I wiped out doing 60 miles an hour and hit my head on the ground, ruining my brand new helmet. Ended up with a A Grade 3 concussion, however, the doctor said if it wasn't for my new helmet I'd probably be dead. I can't imagine riding my bike, motor or not without a helmet.

Brain buckets work and sadly, sometimes one finds out how important they are...the hard way. ATGATT on the VStrom... all the time, no exception, no excuses. Helmet and gloves on the bike... all the time, no exception, no excuses. The VStrom got a bunch of lights so I can be seen from space, the bikes got flashing lights front and back, including flashing lights on the WHITE helmet. Wife jockingly called it a Christmas tree. I call it getting attention from the texting crowd in their 2 ton SUV cages. There is no such thing as luck and there is no such thing as it won't happen. It can and it does no matter how good or how safe one is. In my case, no light pole, it would be just some bruises and hurt pride. Can't control the how or the why, just arm up against it.

My pet peeve is seeing families out cycling where the kids wear helmets but the parents do not. The adults need to set the example. If not the kids will ditch the helmet as soon as they are old enough.
And please parents - have kids wear the helmets properly. It bugs the crap out of me when I see kids with their helmets tilted backwards.

If they don't do as they preach, the kids will ditch the rules the second they are away from the enforcers. That is written in the DNA of all kids. BTW...I called the Parks Department and asked them to fill in the gaps/troughs AND call me back. Also gave them the choice that if they don't, a call from my lawyer and a suit for imporoper maintenace and negligence may alter their thinking. It's not only a hazard for bikes, people can break ankles and hips from falling for older people. I also learned long ago that incidents involving lawyers gets extra quick attention. Cities have insurance and insurance companies don't like hazards.

Wow, so glad you're ok... that was the best purchase you've probably ever made... can't have enough protection... my daughter totalled her car last week and walked away... crying and shaking but the air bags deployed, scared the living daylights out of her... thank goodness cars are designed to absorb the impact through crumple zones

Cars have come a long way and will get even better once they remove humans from driving them. This is from a car fanatic... A couple of weeks ago I tried out the Tesla with full self driving. There was no way I was going to be comfortable with it yet...it did stop, go and park itself in a slot appropriately. My wife HATES driving and now I wonder, if there will be such a thing as a CHEAP Tesla with self driving, how comfortable and safe would she be in local shopping runs. We are looking for a house and 70% of the properties are off limits because they are too far from public transport. Self driving would be a simple answer to that. Even self driving to a GO train would be great...give or take a public transport strike.

The concern about self drive is the ability to hack your car... which is possible now So you're saying that I can hire a hacker and it will self drive her to South America? Where is the downside?
