A couple of years ago I might of said yes but with the progress he showed I think this makes sense.
This is the way things are done in the league now. The team is investing a young talent & sticking to their internal cap.
Surprisingly the TSN panel agrees.

I don’t think so ….i think it’s a bit of coup …top 3 kids in that range ….if they hit on the talent pool opens up a potentially long window to compete.
Happy Canada Day to everyone ….haven't popped in for a long while hope everyone is well.

Less money than I feared. Maybe the best signing today.

I'm a big fan of "show me what you got" but these days, the bargains are in signing kids long term before they prove they are elite.
I'm good with this and in a few years, it may be a bargain.

Kicks in after this season, so he is under contract for the next nine seasons. This is a good deal for both parties and keeps his aav just below both Suzuki and Caufield. Tidy bit of business.

I’m think that both Slaf and Suzuki will hit 90 points by year 1 or 2 of this deal. Potential to be a huge bargain.

If Slaf keeps progressing as he did in the second half of last season, this would have been a much bigger contract methinks.

Works for me. He's shown what he's got IT! And we know he's got all the attributes to be a stud: strong everywhere on the ice with his size and spunk, good skater, head for the game, good passer, great attitude and I'm told a good shot. Bottom line: if you have a first overall you better hope they are an elite player or you messed up. Slafs has shown he may be the franchise player. Gotta go all in!!!
Although i've been worried about a sophmore jinx this year. And yes i beleive last year was his rookie season as his first year was a bust with his injuries and youth - he should not have been in the NHL. With this contract, the pressure, if there is a jinx, will be immense.

Less money than I feared. Maybe the best signing today. That's my opinion. If I'm Slaf I'd have been tempted to wait a year, but heck...it's a lot of money and I suspect he's doing it for his family, too. Well worth it for Hughes. I like it. A lot.

I like this deal a lot. Slafkovsky is a big kid who can really pass the puck and snipe. His great progress was by far the most positive development in the Habs' season. When a high end kid looks like he is actively growing into his immense potential and he seems to savor playing hockey in an intense market, management should try to be proactive.
And the symmetry of the deal he took is not insignificant. He slotted in right there with Caufield, right behind the captain Suzuki. I think it shows good judgment on the part of management and good vibes on the part of the players in terms how willing they are to buy in together.

Habs buy 4 years of Slaf’s UFA years
People tend to forget that since Slaf was on the team at 18 he was set to be a UFA at 25-26.

He is also working on an extension for Guhle, but that one is not going as well. There have been some comparisons to Chicago's Vlasic at 4 x 4.6MM. I think Guhle is a step up on Vlasic and I suspect Guhle's team thinks so too. I expect a long term deal to start with a 6. This is a real challenge for Hughes. He'll have Demidov coming along who will need to be paid and even the supporting cast is going to be above average and would certainly like to be paid accordingly. So far Hughes has done a good job of ensuring the core is locked in, but it gets more difficult in the future.

Vlasic got six years. Yes, Guhle has shown more offensive acumen than the lanky Blackhawk blueliner. But the young Habs' d-man is unlikely to put up serious offensive numbers this upcoming season with no power play time.
To put things in perspective, on a six year contract, Guhle would only be giving up two UFA years, so I honestly think he should seriously consider 6 years/$30 million. I could live with something in the low 6 range if the deal is eight years. But who knows what Guhle thinks his ceiling is? And who knows if management has long-term concerns about Guhle's physicality making his overall longevity something of a question mark?

I suspect HuGo are finding some comfort knowing Josh, Armia, Gally and Dvo will all be coming off the books in the next few years. That's a cap hit of $20 million off the books. At that point we will be paying Suze, Cole and Slafs a total of $23 million. Boy, which group would you rather have a the same price? At that point there will be ample cap space to sign Lane, Mail, and Rein, even if they extend Guhle $5 million next year. Keep in mind, next year Petry and Allen will be off the books which is another $5 million to spend. Bottom line is that HuGo is meticulously building this team and will be in a great position cap wise once they get rid of MB's ridiculous contracts.

Mid roundas in mid 1st? That's not minor. We got Hage for a 21st so not only giving up a Hage but also Barron. A second and Barron a fine by me.

I think they want a prospect of equal value. McGroarty was drafted 14th so they're looking at Guhle (16th),or Mailloux (31st but a higher value). Or Hage that we just drafted at 21. I don't believe they're interested in middle picks or Barron or I think it would have happened already. Hughes has said he's not interested in going sideways.. so guys like Guhle are a nonstarter. Both guys seem entrenched in their positions and beliefs. Cheveldayoff didn't give up PLD until his price was met. I don't see this trade happening
