Sounds like Tavares is giving up the ‘C’ in favour of that Patton of the ice, Auston Matthews. Give him more responsibilities to distract him from what he does best. I’ve never been much in favour of that ‘your best scorer has to be your captain business. McDAvid has never led his team to the Cup. Lafleur was never captain. Gainey and Carbonneau were never the top scorers You should make your captain the guy that lifts others and promotes collegiality.
Will Matthews be that guy? Hasn’t shown it yet. Matthews’ playoff production has been better the last 3 years but still a drop off from regular season numbers.
I don’t think it will make any difference, but won’t hurt either.

I guess he will control the room now more than ever... why don't they just make Biebs the captain

I get it that everyone who is considered a consensus top 10 player in the league is wearing a C, so their front office must have been like hey it is overdue and basically automatic. But the combination of his laid back persona and the awkwardness of taking it away from Tavares makes me wonder if it is worth it. My brother in law has said for years now that Reilly deserved the C.

I'd agree with your BIL. Reilly was usually the guy that faced the media after their playoff disappointments while others avoided the press.

If any other Canadian team was announcing a captaincy change it would be strictly local news. But CBC & CTV assume that the rest of the country actually GAS about the Leafs & wants to be made aware when the Titanic crew is shuffling their deck chairs.
And Leaf fans wonder why we can't stand this team so much.

As much as this news makes my eyes roll, it’s probably the right move for the Leafs. It’s a weird situation, but we all know that the Leafs would fizzle out in the first round if they kept the status quo.
Matthews is one of the best in the league. Yes, it tickles me pink when he fails, but he’s the league’s best scorer and his defense is way better than people give him credit. The Leafs need to challenge Matthews more imo, and giving him the C might just be the challenge that he needs. Maybe then he’ll learn what it’s like to put his team on his back.

Great player, but now he HAS to face the music when the team fails. I wonder if John was told "if you give up the "C" we'll bring you back when your contract is up at xxxx million per season.

Matthews has certainly shown the ability to rise up and part the seas when necessary.

Captain Underpants…over to you now.
And back to regular scheduled programming on Canadian tv except for the 20 part mini series that TSN will no doubt be producing on the captaincy switch. 😜

BRILLIANT MOVE!
Miracle Mathhews has shown time and again that he motivates his fellow players into the best they can be. Only last week, with great effort, they all had unbelievable golf scores. No doubt, that is helped by continuous first round exits and loooong golf seasons.
I'm sad that we can't have a captain like that to counter managements evil desire to extend the hockey season to June.

Loafsnet has 8 videos on this, the hype machine is out in full force... and they had nothing on the Serge Savard golf tournament that had a total off 99 stanley cup rings represented... But if it was a Tie Dumi golf tournament it would have been front page Will post the info in Nostalgia

Dave Feschuk of The Star ( surprisingly) brought this up in his column yesterday. People have not forgotten.

Or he crumbles under the pressure This kinda gives the club a little cost certainty now. When Marner goes for his next contract “you are not the captain, you can’t make that much”. This can now be approached much like what MTL is currently doing “no one can make more than Nick Suzuki” One of the downsides is that AM will need to be more vocal. In the past all the whiny that AM was getting cross checked or touched in the slot came from others. Now we are going to get a constant barrage of gobbledygook from every press conference. Where Tavares came across as composed and mature, I fear AM is going to come across as entitled and whiny
