Tired of quebec born players wanting to come to the habs when the end of their career is near... retire in Pitts and leave us alone

A hard no for me...the youngsters need ice time.

It’s either Kris Letang or Mike Matheson for me. Not both. Letang still produces but probably has 2 years left in the league. Matheson is producing and probably has 2 years left with the Habs. Both are injury prone and don’t really factor into the team’s plans for the contending years. The main difference in my eyes is the side that they play, which is actually relevant to the team’s current situation.
In this case, I would actually be tempted to trade the LHD Matheson and then make a separate trade for Letang, the RHD. Matheson is good value for his contract and would land us a good asset. Letang on the other hand has a terrible contract and Pittsburgh may just be happy to just get the contract off their hands. It would balance out the lineup and give our youngsters more opportunity to get some ice time. He’ll be on LTIR in the last years of his contract I’m sure.
All depends on the returns though. I’m assuming we can get something for Matheson that makes the team better. But who knows, maybe the return for Matheson would be underwhelming, in which case the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. And if the Penguins are asking too much for Letang, just forget about it.

This would make zero sense. If Montreal was planning to sell high on Matheson, then I could live with Letang for two years. The problem is the 37 year old has four years remaining on a pricey contract.

Seems to happen often, huh? Old, worn out Quebec based player rumored or suggested going to the Habs.
I’m waiting for the Sean Couturier posts next. I’d consider Mavrik Bourque but not Letang or Couturier.
Better yet, let’s draft Caleb Desnoyer this coming draft.

Who makes this stuff up? Hughes hasn't shown any inclination to take on this kind of burden during his tenure. In fact I'm pretty sure he's always looking for opportunities to rid himself of the onerous contracts that Bergevin left behind.
Just because Dubas is dopey enough to hand out retirement contracts to over 35 players doesnt mean Montreal or any other team should help him out of his jam. He could not make the hard decisions on Letang or Malkin two years ago & his time in Pittsburgh has been a failure. Now he has to live with his mistakes. He's really going to have to sweeten the pot if he wants someone to take on Letang's contract.

There is such a huge commumity of Hab fans that they can get enormous amount of clicks even at the slightest wiff involving the Habs.
As for Letang...i don't want ANYONE getting in the way or taking ice time in developing Hutson, Mailman, X and Rein.
I simply don't give a flying fishkebob what Letang and his kind want. ONLY whats best for Habs and our future matters.

Tell you what. If I cold get Pittsburgh's 2026, 2027 and 2028 first rounders for Letang, I would consider it. Unprotected of course, because the Pens are the next 'great' team that's headed for bottom 10 territory. Yeah the contract sucks at 6.1 for the next 4 years. The temptation to have 3 cracks at top 10 players would be enticing, even if he has to be bought out, or sent to the minors after this next season.
Anyway, won't happen for numerous reasons, but Pittsburgh's draft picks are going to be gold.

Pittsburgh's future is certainly looking gloomy. And the Penguins are not going to pay future assets to make Letang disappear.
I would say if Crosby is willing to re-sign, then Letang is going to retire in Pittsburgh, end of story. If Crosby walks out the door, then I imagine Dubas will retain money on Letang in order to get a somewhat decent piece or two in return. But even if it is latter scenario that unfolds, Letang to Montreal is not happening.

So the Habs are overloaded with young D guys that all won’t get enough ice time and the local media are all goo-goo about un gars de chez nous who MIGHT want to play in Montreal. Yawn. Nothing to see here (I hope). If Berg was still there, I might be a ton more worried.

It really bugs me to hear that Letang wants to play here. What- is he doing us some huge favor? Where was that feeling when he was about to sign another extension in Pitt?
Now that he has a bloated contract, lots of miles on the odometer & some serious health issues he will deign to sign with MTL? No thanks.

I have a ongoing conversation elsewhere so i might as well post the same thing here....
-----
If it was real and going to happen, it would of done so by now or at worse, the next week or so.
Preseason is around the corner. I don't know if Letang has a family and children, they would need to be enrolled and he would need to get acclimated with the team.
Finally, I'm too lazy to look it up, but can we even afford him cap wise? I know Price silly large cap hit is going LTIR but Letang is still too expensive to keep. Unless the Penquins take someone like Anderson back. They wont do it unless they get prospects as incentive. It's bad enough that they lose Letang for little return, they don't need to lose their shirt on top of that.
Best of all...DO NOTHING
One more year of bottom feeding to add to top prospcts AND break in 3 new defenseman and a couple of rookies up front is well worth the price.

I wouldn't do it for a number of reasons.
a) he's 37 years old...will be 40 at the end of the contract. Yikes! b) even if you can send Anderson the other way, it's still an extra year at $6MM plus. c0 and the most important reason is that he's a RHD and he would be taking ice time from, and blocking the development of Reinbacher, Mailloux and (possibly) Barron.
What on earth makes some fans think Letang would be a good idea?

What on earth makes some fans think Letang would be a good idea? For the same reason that the Monahan trade ended up being a great one. Don’t get me wrong, my knee jerk reaction is to absolutely pass on Letang. I want no part of that contract. But that’s the thing… no one would want any part of that contract, not even Pittsburgh. So what would a trade for Letang actually look like? What kind of sweetener would be involved? If we start talking about a Pittsburgh first rounder, now I start to listen. They’ll be drafting in the lottery spots in the very near future. I get the concern about Letang taking up minutes that should go to the youth, but I don’t foresee a crazy log jam on the right side. Savard is getting traded, I think we can book that. If anything, it could help alleviate the log jam on the left side because Letang would make Matheson expendable. So when you start to piece it together, we could gain new prospects and/or draft picks from the Matheson trade, the Savard trade AND for taking on Letang. And if we want a long window of contention, we need to find ways of gaining new assets without making the team worse. Out: Matheson, Savard @ TDL In: Letang, Hutson, plus assets from the 3 trades (and bonus: Guhle goes back to LHD) Guhle Letang Hutson Savard (Mailloux after TDL) Xhekaj Barron/Reinbacher I know this is a long post, but I really do think we have the time to take on one more ugly contract in exchange for first rounders. Demidov hasn’t played a game yet, Slaf is still developing, Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux/Beck aren’t integrated yet… we won’t be a true contender until 3 years I expect. Letang will be on LTIR by then.

Under your scenario...and MSL prioritizes development over winning...i surrender. My fear is strictly that the kids who are still in NHL diapers don't get left behind so we "win games". I think all our big youngsters can be top 4, but they need coaching and ice time to make all those on ice decisions into instinctive "vision". Guhle, X have canons and i suspect so does Rein. When to commit to the O zone is that split second decision that coaching and ice time will teach. Lastly...i thought that Beaulieu had all the tools but never amounted to anything because he never learned when and how to use them. I watched him easily break into the opposing zone...and no one to pass too or make any play. I don't want more Beaulieu's in our future. We're weeks away now from our future...

All good points. The Pens will be in Lottery country, but not deep down. When Crosby retires, then the drop will be calamitous, so a pick in 27 or 28 would make sense. One issue is the term. Hughes stopped entertaining Marchessault when the projected term went past 3 years. I believe contracts to Dach and Newhook (plus Xhekaj) are going to be problematic if Letang is still around. Can you unload a $6MM contract for a (then) 39 or 40 year old dman? It would be a similar or worse situation to Anderson and Gallagher today. His effectiveness is also a concern. Without a crystal ball, we don't know how Protz will develop, or someone we draft this year. Will Letang be in their way? Will he simply be another unnecessary boat anchor? The Pens draft pick down the road is a real attraction. I wouldn't do it for Letang because I think the risks and future costs are too high. But another guy, with a shorter term. Hell ya.

Yuck....No. 4 seasons of Letang is a long time. He will depreciate quicker than a new vehicle leaving the sales lot. He'll be 40 years old on his last season. Hard pass. The only way that it is even remotely doable is doing a buyout after 2 years.

Boys, I just do not see any scenario where Pittsburgh pays assets to make Letang go away. If Crosby re-signs, then Letang is going to stay where he is, end of story. If Crosby says check please, then all three of the legacy guys are probably gone. But it would not make sense for a rebuilding Penguins team with plenty of cap room and far too little in the prospect pipeline to hand out early round picks to dispense with Letang. The logical play for Dubas would be to retain money on Letang and Malkin in order to maximize the asset return Pittsburgh can get. A healthy Letang at $3 million would probably interest some contenders (not Montreal) even though the term left on his contract kind of socks.

Letang has a full no movement clause which shuts down any dreams of a return by Dubas.
Basically all Letang has to do is demand a trade and if Hughes wants Letang to come over and be part of his plans, then Hughes just offers 5 COSTCO hot dogs. What is Dubas suppose to do with a pouting 6 million dollar player who doesn't want to play for his team?
I suggest Dubas buy mustard and relish for his hot doggys...

I mean, let's consider that we got Laine AND a 2nd for a spare part. Letang's contract is far worse than Laine's, he's older, has a NMC, he's (potentially) trying to choose the trade destination... Now I may be wrong, but I expect this contract will be tough to move. Not to mention, Dubas has gone on record saying he thinks the Penguins will be back in the playoffs again real soon. Ha! My fear is strictly that the kids who are still in NHL diapers don't get left behind so we "win games". That's my fear with the CURRENT lineup. Guhle is forced to play on the right, which takes away an opportunity for Mailloux or Barron to audition. And as long as Matheson is around, he'll be patrolling the left side on the top PP unit - a spot that should have Hutson's name written all over it. But instead, we get to watch another year of Matheson not passing the puck to Slafkofsky on the PP. Yay

Well, now Crosby is not a UFA until the summer of 2027, when he will turn 40. Yes, while it seems unlikely, I suppose if at some point like next summer or the following one, he could go to management and say I would like to be traded to a contender. And given all he has done for that organization, I imagine they would try to accommodate such a request.
Anyway, the issue is over for now. And Letang and Crosby can retire together after 2026-27 in the same sweater they started in.
