Podkolzin was picked under the previous regime, but still this has to sting for Vancouver fans. Evidently the new regime and, specifically Tocchet, had no time for him.
Edmonton already acquired another reclamation project on the wing (Jarventie) when they dumped Bourgault. Honestly, though, I cannot see how players like Jarventie and Podkolzin would replace Holloway. Holloway may not be living up to his draft position, but at least he is fast and willing to play a physical style of hockey. Jarventie and Podkolzin are perhaps more skilled, but they are not wired to play a direct brand of North-South hockey.
But hey for the negligible cost and a cap hit that would can be buried fully in the AHL, I can see why Edmonton was interested.

Sure got this one wrong. I liked Podkholzin a lot at the draft, but in my defense the limited viewings I had of his were in the U18's where he played the best hockey of his life. I thought he was a terrific clutch scorer. The reality was not so much. Unfortunately he went through the Covid years, was developed over 2 seasons in the KHL with SKA (7-12-19 in 65 games) and then in Vancouver and Abbotsford with a dysfunctional Canucks team (before the last 2 years). He may never have become much, but it sure shows the importance of a good development program and also is a warning about having young guys (cough, cough) develop in Russia instead of here. Fortunately, it's a max one year for Demidov, but I'd like to see him here sooner.

Yeah, Podkolzin milked a really strong Hlinka performance 10 months before his draft to a top 10 pick. He never was able to replicate anything near that production or consistently in other leagues. I saw him live in Abby twice last December against the Rocket. I was excited to see how he looked, and came away feeling like he was nowhere near knocking the door down for a spot in Vancouver that you would expect from a top 10 pick. The best prospect in that two game series was a kid named Mailloux!

I really liked this guy in his draft year but man has his value as a player has dropped considerably. Could be a nice réclamation project or could be a bust. At the cost of a 4th rounder, it is worth the risk.

I was referring to the Oilers and their secondary scoring. For Montreal, there is no place for him.
