Wow… the whole hockey world is probably shaking right now. That’s just terrible news.

No matter the altering substance of choice, impaired driving is nothing less than premeditated potential murder and/or suicide. Of course, no such driver "means" for it to happen... Senseless and defenseless.

The Gaudreau family must be pretty torn up over this. As a father, I would hate to lose two sons like this. There is going to be lots of grieving in Columbus and New Jersey.
From a purely business and hockey standpoint the impact on the Blue Jackets is significant. They brought in Monahan to play center with Gaudreau, in hopes of jump starting his career. The cap hit wasn't being justified with the point totals he was putting up the past few years. Now with his untimely and sad death, and the trade of Laine, they have an abundance of cap space to shape their team going forward this and next year.

What makes it even more heartbreaking is that their sister was to be married today.
Every time I hear of one of these incidents I am baffled. It's 2024 and people are still driving drunk. This accident happened around 8PM and the guy was already loaded & trying to pass someone on the shoulder. I hope he gets the harshest possible sentence .

So awful. A bit of road rage too. The guy was trying to pass 2 cars on a country road. He passed the first car and the second car drifted to the middle of the road to get around the cyclists. Drunk guy didn't see the cyclists and thought the driver was messing with him and preventing him from passing on the left so in a drunken rage tried to pass the guy on the inside, didn't see there were cyclists in the shoulder and hit Johnny and his brother from behind.
I will say riding bikes on a two-lane country road after sunset with a likely speed limit of ~40 MPH is dicey in any case. So many accidents these days involving people on bikes...

Just really sad, for the family primarily and the hockey world in general.

Tell me about bike accidents...I was in one and it was a freaky as it gets AND far more then i bargained for. My wife and i love biking, but it's abundantly clear how exposed one is on a bike. Wearing a helmet is step, not a solution. Any given texting moron can still take your life even with the smallest car. Now our biking will be limited to bike paths rather the city outings. Rest of the time...2 tons of steel and 4 wheels.

I thought about this and about visiting friends at a different parts of our time zone. Here, we're in PST, but in the far eastern end of the zone. People in Vancouver are 300KM further west and some in the north west of BC are even further west. It is not as dark on the western edge of a time zone. Columbus is not on the western edge of EST but it is at the western end. Chicago is not far away and they're in Central time. It would not have been as dark at 8:30 in Columbus as it is in, say, Boston at the same time. Sunset here is 7:45 and we have some quite tall hills around, so it gets dark sooner than on a prairie. Vancouver has sunset at 8pm. Prince Rupert (as far west as any city in BC) has sunset at 8:35. I'm guessing it wasn't dark yet in Columbus at 8:30.

Totally true about the western edges of the time zones. In this case accident happened in New Jersey where Gaudreau is from. Sunset was probably around 7:30pm

Visibilty is life and death on a bike.
My bike has flashing light front and back. My helmet has to be white and with it's own flashing lights...and i still avoid riding at night.
But...it doesn't mean a damn thing if there is a drunk or texting moron behind the wheel.
I got my first bike at eight and it was FREEDOM to explore the world. It has stayed with me all my life that is why this kind of senseless death sets me off. It's a punch in the gut how deadly it can become just because a piece of human trash has no regard for other peoples life.

My comment elsewhere...
----
As far as I'm concerned, it should be mandatory jail for texting or drinking and driving.
On my motorcycle height advantage, I can't tell you how many times I've seen people text. These people can kill me by the next light. Even worse on a bike. At least with the motorcycle a can disappear ahead of them, but on a bike, fully crushable at their first mistake.
As for Johhny Hockey, his family was ready to celebrate, now complete devastation. The trash of a human needs to made an example. 20 years should be minimum.

IMO this type of crime is just a step below murder & should be treated as such. There are too many examples here where this type of incident leads to short sentences and early release. To add to the tragedy I read this morning that Matthew's wife is pregnant. This guy should not get out of jail until he's a senior citizen at least.
