I think it was more because he took a team friendly deal last time and this was a kind of make even deal for the discount last time. Do I think it is too much? Yeah, I would have slotted him in around 12.5/12.75 per, but I don't have the cap projections for the next 8 years. If this helps the Oilers keep McDavid, then I guess it is money well spent. However the Oilers need to find a way to dump the Nurse contract as that money needs to go to Bouchard.

I think it was more because he took a team friendly deal last time and this was a kind of make even deal for the discount last time. Similar to Gallagher's current contract in that respect, compensating him for a previous team-friendly deal. As great as Leon is, it's hard to imagine that this contract ages well. Leon will turn 30 in the first month of this 8 year deal.

Don't know if he's worth that much but I must agree that Auston would be in Biebsland if he broke a cuticle, let alone a rib

Even if Draisaitl is a step slower on the back end of the deal, his skill is so off the charts that he will put up big numbers. It is precisely the guys like Gallagher that smart GMs would never give an overpay contract to because the guy was never a high end skill type and when those guys slow down/break down, an overpay is real trouble.
Edmonton is trying to win the Cup now, so not signing him was not an option. And it was obvious that he was going to jump over Matthews' AAV. Of course, things will tricky cap-wise for the Oilers. There are only so many dollars in a hard cap world. McDavid will hit the $16 per plateau. Bouchard is going to require some major coin given the video game numbers he fires up thanks to the lethal power play. So probably half the guys on a roster like Edmonton's are literally going to have to be a mix of kids on ELCs and vets making league min.

Draisaitl is a real playoff warrior, so there's that part to keep in mind. And....was there really any choice in the matter? That number is probably based on a percentage of some projected CAP figure over the life of the contract.
You know you're going to have to pay McDavid more, unless you're planning to trade him (Just think what the Leafs would give)

It's his 2nd 8 year deal. He doesn't screw the club with 4 & 5 year deals like Matthews & Marner.

I thought the Oilers were in tough with Drai's last contract with so much money taken up among a small number of players but by the end of it, his contract was one of the best deals in the league. Moving forward they'll be in the same top heavy situation once McDavid resigns. The trade off of having 2 players of that calibre on the same team. Seems so likely that the Oilers will win the Cup eventually as long as those 2 stay healthy and they skillfully play salary cap gymnastics.

You can't live only on delicious cheesecake alone...nor win cups with only two stars.
Three players are going to eat up 38 million of their salary cap and 50 million is not enough to field 18 quality players. Nor do they have a prospect pipeline.
The window is now 2-3 years and i doubt they will win the cup agaist well structured team like Panthers.
In fact...extra bold prediction...we will be competing for a cup in 3 years and just about the time Laffs and Oil are rebuilding.
