What's with the pyjamas?
Here's to hoping #29 is retired and hanging from the rafters in the next 15 years.

I always forget the exact (it probably is not exact, eh) NHL rules about how many NHLers have to suit up for a preseason game. My thought has always been the home team should feel obligated to their season ticket holders and ticket purchasing public to ice at least 10 NHL skaters and one of the goalies projected to be in the #1 or #2 role. As for the visitors, honestly I think there should be no stipulation at all.
I scanned the box score of the Pens-Sabres game last night and I swear that looked like 3/4 of the Sabres' opening night lineup, whereas for Pittsburgh it looked like no more than 1/4. Again, that is fine in my book.

And for what it is worth, if anyone is watching the Sens visit to Toronto tonight, the Leafs are operating with more than 3/4 of their regular season starters and the Senators have no more than a handful of NHLers.

That's one reason it's not wise to base anything on preseason games. Another example is the Florida Nashville game today where the Panthers squeaked out a 3-2 win. They dressed Sam Bennet, Matt Tkachuk, Nate Schmidt, Mikkola, Lundell, Rodrigues, Luosterainen, Ekblad, Spencer Knight and Bjornfot (recognizeable NHL players).
The Preds dressed McCarron, Hinostroza, Zach L'Herureux and Joakim Kemell (the latter 2 haven't played in the NHL, but I recognize their names). Everyone else (oops, sorry, Matt Murray too) has to be bound for the AHL or ECHL. I knows a lot of obscure names and these guys were 'guys'. When Mike McCarron is your prime roster player, why would anyone pay any money to go watch that game? Ok it was a split squad.
The other Nashville group included Stamkos, O'Rielly, Evangelista, FAbbro, Lauzon and a bunch of guys. Florida had Boqvist, Reinhart, Forsling, Barkov, Bobrovsky, Verhaeghe, Kulikov, Greer and Nosek. They won that one 6-2. Scott Wedgewood sported a .739 save percentage in that game. Thagt's another reason to ignore preseason game results as goaltending can skew everything really badly.

If you shouldn’t base anything on preseason games, than you really shouldn’t base anything on inter-squad scrimmages. But that now does beg the question what do you base things on?

Well, the Senator's B team beat the Leafs' A team tonight, 6-5. That is kind of amusing. Toronto's goalies (Woll and Matt Murray) were, to be kind, rather porous.
Monday morning sock bad enough without outside irritants, so I will refrain from needling my brother-in-law over the next 24 hours.

I find it hard to believe that Toronto is heading into this season with Woll, Stolarz and Murray(yikes!) as their goalies. Do they really believe the stuff they say to the media about that group? They will have to score a lot of goals.

I guess the Leafs are banking on Stolarz enjoying linear development at the age of 30.
Last season's backup run in Florida resulted in solid numbers.
27 GP. 16-7-2. 2.03 and .925
He might find himself in a 1A 1B situation with Woll.

Fourth line is forgettable outside of Tuch. Third line is also almost forgettable. I haven't been impressed with Heineman as his goal scoring has mimiced last year's Josh Anderson. If Kapanen can make those guys look good, he'll jump even further up my prospect ladder (He's already been fairly high). The top lines are fine. I'm not keen on Anderson, but MSL clearly has made him a personal project which means he is going to get miles of undeserved rope. The goal, obviously, is to make him successful to the point we only have to give up a 3rd rounder to trade him. Not sure Dvorak is that guy, but hell, same thing as Kapanen....if Josh Roy can make those two look good, he ties for rookie of the year (with Hutson, Kapanen and a couple others of our D). The top line is a work in progress. I don't expect much from them other than an effort to get into game shape, get the rust off and install new timing belts.
The D are interesting. HUtson with Savard may lengthen Savard's career. Engstrom with Mailloux makes sense. Engstrom is more defensively aware than Mailloux and it's a test for Mailloux to keep improving his defensive hockey sense. Xhekaj and Barron will also bear watching. Management is giving all our young D the opportunity to raise their games and make a case to start the season. I suspect Xhekaj will indeed be improved, and Barron has supposedly had a good start to camp. Preseason isn't the best barometer, but if you can't look good against marginal and AHL 'guys', you're in trouble.
Who cares about the goaltending? It's going to be Primeau and Mutumbo starting the season. No question marks there.
I'm really looking forward to this year, finally. Expectations were reasonably good last year too, until Dach got hurt. C'mon fellas. Let's make the playoffs so we can raspberry all those detractors.

MSL told me personally that he's putting both X man for the Loafs game. Gave them free reign to beat the dough out of them...
I don't like Mailman with Engstrom. The Natural partner for Mailman is Guhle who is at another level defensively compared to Engstrom.
Hutson and Savard combo better get use to it and Savard better pack his brass knuckles. This is where playing Little X can make the difference BUT I'm assuming Hutson will normally come on with the first line. Without question Hutson will be targeted and X should make it absolutely clear that he will beat the dough out a Loaf of his choice if they touch Hutson. Beat the 'stach out of Matthews and the Loafs will NEVER touch Hutson.
In fact, this is where putting Mailman and X together along with them wearing a spiked collar, pitbull style, will deliver a message...
If I'm Little X I'm making a name for myself in exactly this situation...
Philly is NOT the Broad Street bullies of old, but preseason also brings out the goons and the ghouls trying to earn their 3 second of fame.

Did you miss the memo where Guhle had his appendix removed a few days ago? I don't believe recoveries from appendectomies are that quick. Otherwise, yeah, Guhle sounds good. We still have to see what we have in Engstrom. Guhle is our best dman right now.

That should be where we dress our toughest guys and if anyone and I mean anyone on Florida goes head hunting, we decapitate them. There's nothing like the message that Larry sent Dave Schultz and the Flyers to pop their thuggish balloon.

And the SportsNet headline over the weekend was "Biggest Reason These Maple Leafs Will Be Different". I think this is the 50th time they posted the article before the start of a season I hear that there are 50 Ways to Leave Your Loser there's criticism on Twitter from Leaf fans, for Marner and Matthews, who were on the ice for Yakemchuk's winning goal (along with McCabe) and the critics didn't care for Matthews' effort. I don't know if it was for the OT or just that goal. Matthews was actually caught way up ice in the offensive zone and only Marner and McCabe were back. McCabe did one of those flyby stick checks and missed. Nice move by Yak, but really, it's OT in a preseason game. The vets aren't going 100%, especially in that type of situation. The Leaf fans are over the top wanting a win over Ottawa. On the other hand, Ottawa dressed a very thin line-up and TO should have won handily. To provide context, the player of the game was Reinhardt and no that's not a typo. It's not Sam Reinhart, it was Cole Reinhardt, a 24 year old LW drafted in the 6th round in 2020. He is a half point per game guy, but in the AHL. Fighting for a 4th line spot, maybe. Those are the guys who go 100% in preseason games....along with draftees of course.
