Patrik Laine is the only forward with more than one shot on net. He has three. Only other player with more than one is Arber Xhekaj, with two

So. Recap. Who impressed? Who sucked? Who put their skate forward for a surprise spot?
Enquiring minds want to know.

How good is a third line of Kapanen-Beck-Newhook/Roy in two years.

The Cup is ours!!! 5-0!!! With two rookie goalies getting the shutout. And missing our top line and our highest paid player was pointless. I tell ya, the Cup is ours!!! Leafs fans told me i can make this assessment after an exhibition game as they are so happy to have a 50 goal scorer in Max Pacioretty

Damn...I have the game. OK...time to watch.
I'm going to make comments to myself...
Mailman...good head swiveling
Hutson needs more acceleration and top speed
Kappy can dance. Impressive
Dach is getting his beak wet
Laine is rusty
Savard is the blackhole of plays
Liane-Dach-Newhook don't have any chemistry yet. The is lots of potential nut not many results...yet.
Hutson is continuing to be Hutson. He surprised too many guys with his passes who are simply not his level.
I enjoyed this game. I also love that I can see the numbers and French was just background noise.

He'll need a few games, but if Suzuki can get him to buy in .... MSL said the sound the crowd made when Laine did that reminded him of when he watched Lafleur rush the puck

I didn't get the game, but in his opinion, Tony Marinaro thought Oliver Kapanen was the best player on the ice last night ... Cheers.

I didn't get the game, but in his opinion, Tony Marinaro thought Oliver Kapanen was the best player on the ice last night ... Cheers. And PJ stock didn't agree with him. While saying some things that made sense, Stock still can't get himself to believe that Suzuki is a No. 1 centre in the NHL. Spoken like a 4th liner. He also has reservations about Hutson. I think he feels Hutson won't be able to handle the physicality. Interesting, because one one play I saw last night, along the right boards in the neutral zone, Hutson raced for the puck with a much bigger Flyer. Hutson was going to get there first, so the Flyer was going to finish his check. Hutson had to reach for the puck and flipped it (one handed, I believe) off the boards to a winger, and twisted at the same time and the Flyer missed most of Hutson. He has that same ability that a lot of elite players without size have, namely the ability to avoid hard hits. The one he took in the Rookie game was because he was coming off evading another guy to make a play and the Leaf deliberately interfered with a late hit. If Hutson hadn't bounced back up, the Leaf could have gotten a game misconduct. That situation is going to be rare and maybe it will happen more often. The solution, of course, is for someone to skate up to the opponents bench and say that if any more of that $hit happens, the best players on their team are going to get the same treatment. You need a Xhekaj to back that up, of course, but we have one, or two. That fixes the issue in a hurry.

I like how he fakes that foolish drop pass Me too. Matheson did that once last year and scored, I believe. The whole PK group is trained to wait for that pass, so when you don't do it, the lead forechecker is out of position and you have a 4 on 3. The trick, of course is having someone like Hutson who can gain the zone and create havoc with the puck while the PK group is out of 'shape'. Hutson then drew 2 guys to him and fed a pass cross ice to someone with a clear lane to the goal. He does things no one expects, partly because he can and partly because his brain works a couple of steps ahead of everyone else. He's doing this without the anticipated benefit of Adam Nicolas working with him to improve his top end speed and his upper body strength. Look out when that happens.

When Lane was interviewed after the game as first star he was asked about the saucer pass in the intra-squad and had he planned that, Lane said no, the opportunity was there so he made the pass... so glad we drafted him...

It only works if someone is willing to go with or after one of the other teams stars without sending out invitations or following the code. I've yet to see anyone on MTL do it in many many many years ... On that note, last night Nicolas Deslaurier hit Engstrom. It was close to being from behind and really close to being boarding. Lucas Condotta went after Deslaurier, and Deslaurier tied him up easily, and you could tell Deslaurier did not want to fight him and hurt him badly.

He had that stretch of 10 games with us where everything he shot went in and that earned him a 2 year contract. He's actually improved since then, I'd say, to the point where he doesn't hurt you on the 4th line. And he is one tough customer. Good of him to recognize that Condotta had to challenge him and that neither one really wanted to fight in a meaningless ex game. Condotta for a different reason than Deslauriers. But good of Condotta to do what is expected of teams.
I find it odd that Florida plays as aggressively as they do without having a premier pugilist on the roster. You'd think some teams would have put them in their place by now. Maybe this year.
