Mike Matheson has 96 points in 130 games with the Montreal Canadiens. Not bad for someone who is not an offensive defenseman How does that compare to recent point producing defensemen? Shea Weber - 146 points in 275 games Jeff Petry - 248 points in 508 games PK Subban - 278 points in 434 games Matheson is not an offensive defenseman?? Ohhhh- kay then Teams are not built with 23 clones, all 6’0, 190 lbs, 24 years old. They may average that but some players shoot better, skate faster, pass better and score more. We need someone older who still plays with smarts. Matheson has never been a problem, produces, loves the team and plays both ways. Dvorak is past his prime and Gallagher is a warrior who bled blue, blanc rouge but his body is breaking down. Everyone including Gretzky is available for the right price but pushing productive guys out to try out kids is not advancing. 11 goals, 51 assists, 58 penalty minutes and a minus 24... he got primo pp time... the minus 24 is problematic... he needs to work on that

Ohhhh- kay then I don't know how easy it would be to get this...(I am inherently lazy) but I wonder how many points Matheson had from the PP before Slaf got inserted on the #1 line compared to after. So that would be BS and AS . Matheson had 23 PP assists and I don't recall many of them starting from some deceptive play that Matheson made. I also wonder how many assists He could have gotten if he didn't have a detour sign pasted onto Slaf. I can't forgive him for that. So many instances where Slaf was clearly open with space in front of him and Matheson would pass it to Suzuki or Caufield. That attitude is the epitome of a veteran who disprespects rookies. He eventually got the message but I wonder if he changed his behaviour on his own or if Marty's video work did that for him. When I hear comments that both he and Hutson handle the puck well, I cringe. Both tend to fumble the puck at times. Hutson tends to get it back and he is far more creative with it than Matheson. On a podcast today, it was noted how well Hutson makes saucer passes and I have seen that as well. Take a look at that video where he sends Heineman away with the flip pass. It lands flat enough that Heineman wastes no time corralling it and speeding away. It is a true gift to be able to do that so consistently. Yeah, Matheson does a lot of community stuff and he's a good ambassador and a good teammate (I think as I haven't personally heard stories but I'm guessing he's a good guy). If he has a dog or cat, that confirms he's a good guy. That ensures he's not traded, but I think the team will improve if he plays a lesser role on the club. 20-21 minutes a night, not 25. Take him off the first PP, that's non-negotiable, and he probably doesn't need to be on the PK. Less time will have him less fatigued and probably making fewer mistakes.

Matheson was -24. The closest I saw (I only checked a few, since Hockeydb's team stats don't yet include the +/- column and you have to check each individual) was Slaf at -19. I suspect his numbers after he was moved to the top line improved considerably. Suzuki was -14. Caufield, who you would suspect to have a poor stat, was -4. David Savard, who also played against tough competition was -1. Kaiden Guhle was -8 and a fourth liner who usually gets lousy +/1 stats because they're a bottom 6 guy, Jake Evans, was -1. In comparison then, the only guy close to Matheson was a 19 year old who was still feeling his way into the league. That's simply not good enough and however highly the coaching staff thinks of Matheson, he needs to improve defensively. His high risk type of game likely helped with the points, but didn't help the team overall.

As far as I can tell, Slafkovský was put on the #1 PP on Dec 4th against the Kraken. Up to that point Matheson only had 3 assists on the PP

Interesting. From Dec 5th on, he had 21 PP assists. Not sure if it means anything. The PP was @** to start the season and only got marginally better throughout the season. There was a stretch towards the end of the year where it clicked for a little stretch
