hey guys, i needed to make this thread for my own player evaluations, tired of trying to find comments and things i said about juniors i've seen on this board, the search function isn't very good. you guys don't need to comment, and this isn't to toot my own horn, just for my own information. i may have a future in scouting, and would like to have a resume of sorts.
i've been looking at how i've evaluted juniors too lately, was high on price, lucic, perron in the last 6 months and setoguchi was my favourite "skill" guy at last years team canada jr camp, and they're all in the show. timmins, you there?
may 23rd: well there is no doubting that perron has excellent skills and his skating is actually very good. his "shiftiness" is second to none in the tournament, he looks a lot like an afinigenov in a lot of ways, that same ability to move in and out of traffic like a jackrabbit. he's small, but what i liked about him is that he's not afraid to get his nose dirty.
on seeing perron at 07 mem cup compared to espo at 06 canada jr camp
anyway i saw the list, when i saw ellerby at #14 and hickey not in the top 30 i stopped looking at the rest of the players. it seems to be a bit east biased, the other scouting services are more evenly spread out across canada.
hickey went #4 and mckeen's didn't rate him top 30 ;D
having now seen ryan white play a few times this season i don't think chipchura is a good comparison. chips is average at best skater, white is a pretty good skater, he isn't as gritty as he was last season, but is a great passer and hard work. chips game is more about positioning, white is more about finding the spots where the puck is going to go to and being a step ahead of most.
i was never really impressed with esposito at the camp last year, everyone was talking about him, he looks like a fast skater, but he just takes small quick choppy steps (sorry not very scout-like terminology) and he was a good stickhandler, but i thought setoguchi was better, but he got cut again this year so there goes that.
during 2007 whl playoffs before blum was drafted
blum is about 6' 175 lbs. i've seen him play 50+ games for the giants live. he's really coming into his own in the playoffs along with spencer macachek. i saw ellerby play 2-3 times this season, he's done most of his growing already (height wise) and is also very good, more of a big body type whereas blum has probably more upside and is more risky.
there is also a kid name hickey that plays D for seattle that is also a very good player.
i'd personally take ellerby, then blum then hickey.
as you can hickey was rated above ellerby and blum in october, but now both ellerby and blum have moved up, and i expect blum to keep moving up if he keeps playing the way he has in the playoffs for the giants. i would almost say that he's their best d-man in the playoffs, ahead of franson, mikkelson and thelen all highly rated D prospects.
sleeper pick could be spencer machachek in the 2nd round. [/quote]
...he went from about 4th-5th to about 8th-10th... Let's not blow things out of proportion... I mean the guy still won the Mike Bossy award at the end of the year as best "hope" of the LHJMQ, an award previously won by guys like Crosby, Luongo, Lecavalier, Dumont, Vermette, etc... I can understand you prefer other prospects but to tag Esposito as a bust at this point is a bit.. well... comical.
bust potential, is not tagging as a bust.
i don't like the way he skates, and i didn't like him last year live at the canada jr tryouts.
after seeing him at 06 world juniors
ben maxwell 2nd round pick 2006 (see how positive i can be even after they pass my fav whl player!?)

i've seen so many prospects play over the years in BC, the 3 most dominating were Paul Kariya, Jerome Iginla and Carey Price.habmeister said:

i saw this guy play 4-5 times against the giants and he was almost always one of the best players on the ice and the leader or the ice. i really like this pick and am looking forward to watching him again next season and giving you guys updates. nice pick. having said all that i really wish they would have taken milan lucic from the vancouver giants who boston took with the next pick, i think this kid could turn out to be a 20 goal player that can beat the crap out of anyone that dares drop the leather.
