Patrice Bergeron's retirement has transported Bruins management into the real world. They no longer can hold up the captain and say "we can't pay you any more than this guy". (That belongs to Kent Hughes now). Now their stars are wanting to get paid, as they should, and shucks, gee, those galdawrn players are making a mess of our payroll. Sucks, doesn't it, Neely. Having such great interpersonal skills, Neely then comes out with that kind of PC and Jacobs has clearly ok'd it. I can imagine how the camaraderie on the Bruins will be this year.

Swayman has the same agent as Nylander and he held out to December 1st...

they gave Swayman the leverage when they moved Ullmark. Now they face starting the season with Korpisalo.

Would love to see the Habs throw a 8 year 9 million per offer at him and make the bruins sweat even more. He is a very good to possibly great young goaltender.

You can't offer an 8 year contract to a free agent of an other team, only a 7 year contract, 8 year contracts are only for your own free agents.

You can't offer an 8 year contract to a free agent of an other team, only a 7 year contract, 8 year contracts are only for your own free agents. Good clarification and not only that. All offer sheets have their CAP based on a maximum 5 year basis. So if you offered Swayman a 7 year contract at $8MM per, totalling $56MM, that $56 for CAP purposes gets divided by 5. Montreal's CAP hit is then $10.1MM per year, not $8. Totally unlikely to every happen in other words, even if Hughes contemplated it.

Neely probably did have Jacobs' on board with what he said, but nevertheless it seems rather questionable to come off sounding so terse and condescending. And that is not even touching on the detail of whether Neely was playing fast and loose with the numbers because if he never offered 8 x 8 then he is making a further mess of the already strained relationship with Swayman.

That comment kind of makes you wonder about the workings of the Bruins HO.
I’d be asking:
Did mgmt have a final 8x8 figure but Sweeney hadn’t gotten to that point in the ‘negotiation’ yet. But Neely wasn't aware of that?
Did Neely let that number slip by mistake? He has a temper so it may well be he lost it.
Was this a ploy to somehow discredit Swayman for being greedy, hoping the agent would remain silent?
Regardless, the contract issue has been fumbled badly and there’s a lot if egg on Neely’s face. I’ll pass on any eggs that have touched Neely’s face. 😮🤮

He signed for 66 million, 8 years. So 8.25 per season. Not a bad deal for both sides and would of paid that. Was hoping it would of been higher to make Boston squirm though.

Not dismissing his talent whatsoever because Swayman has it in spades, but I really believe this contract is incredible for a RFA goalie with less than 100 games in the league. I know the club is buying 6 UFA years, but nevertheless I think Boston lost this negotiation.

Boston has a habit of trading away the guys that hard to negotiate with. The only name I can come up with right now is Joe Thornton, but there were others. Just saying, don't be surprised.

It's also, as we know, an awful lot to pay for a goalie. Yeah, it's an important position, but it limits what you have to spend elsewhere. Anyway, glad it takes effect immediately, leaving them with less than $2MM in cap space and still have to sign Tyler Johnson if they're going to. They should, because their depth is nothing to write home about. It's going to be a weakness for them all year and if they have any injuries at all to their top 5, (which is questionable...an aging Marchand, Lindholm, Coyle, Zacha...not exactly prime AAA beef).
The D has 3 strong guys in McAvoy (elite), the other Lindholm, and Carlo, but Zadorov is not, IMO, a 2nd pair guy and the 3rd pair is meh. They absolutely need Swayman to be the second coming of Price. Wonder what kind of year he'll have?

They got desparate. They traded Ullmark before signing Swayman and left themselves with Korpisalo as their only option. Ask Ottawa fans what that's like.

I had another chuckle about a comment on 32 Thoughts. Friedman said one of the best things about Swayman, was his coming out and saying that everything starts from zero as of now. That's paraphrasing, but meaning that the relationship is starting fresh and all that happened before is forgotten. I nearly sprayed my coffee all over my monitor. Sure, Friedge. That's like two people non-amicably divorced saying everything is cool now. We can be friends. Yeah, right.
The sour memories of this negotiation are going to linger. Neely is not a guy who forgives easily and as is mentioned above, Neely has a hard time forgiving players who play hardball in negotiations. If Swaymen isn't the second coming of Christ (easily envisioned) he may be traded and a NMC is not going to help. He'll have to waive it or Boston will just sit him, even if it hurts their CAP situation. That's if things really go off the rails, but even if they kiss and make up, the bad feelings will persist. I love it.
