More cuts announced.
The last 3 that were recalled for Ottawa have been returned to Laval.
Condotta Trudeau Gignac
The less surprising:
Logan Mailloux Adam Engström Jakub Dobeš
The biggest surprise for some (I had him pegged for Laval)
Joshua Roy

Yeah, he didn't deserve to make the team based on his camp performance. My concern is that fans will (and some already have) start piling on him, calling him lazy and referring back to his first juniour year when he was overweight and didn't apply himself. I think he's past that. Whatever caused the poor camp, it shouldn't be his attitude. Not after 3 years of success by working hard. He had some injury late last year that ended his season and I wonder if that is still affecting him. There could be numerous reasons. The Habs are making decisions based in large part on asset management and waiver eligibility but also on merit. Joshua failed on both those counts. Kapanen couldn't be evaluated more if he was cut and sent back to Sweden. Heineman outplayed Roy. That's pretty well it, but it's not like this is permanent. Injuries will happen (hopefully to a certain guy) and Roy could be called up.
On the silver lining side, Laval should be much better to start the year, with Mailloux, Engstrom and Roy. Vincent will be happy, though he was getting some good players regardless of who was sent to Laval.

I guess you reward the guys that earned it in camp, at least for now. Hard to see the likes of Alex Barre-Boulet, Emil Heineman and Michael Pezzetta sticking for the season, but Roy should be disappointed that he couldn't crack the lineup with Laine injured and a spot on the 2nd line up for grabs. That said, the bar is higher for Roy than it is for 4th line fillers so more is expected of him. I certainly don't want to see him buried on the 4th line but he's being counted on to produce and facilitate offense so until he's ready to do that he should play in Laval.

I concur with the general consensus that Roy did not have a good camp and playing on the fourth line is neither in his best interest nor the club's. Being counted on for big minutes in all situations for the Rocket is not a bad thing.
Kapanen will probably get the first crack on the second line. But if he plays tentative or looks invisible, then Heineman may be next up.
Unless there are a rash of injuries, I think Barre-Boulet will have his own personalized recliner in the press box. If the over/under on games played for Pezzetta is 41, I bet the over without hesitation. In a division with a lot of teams looking to play physical in your face hockey, a guy who plays the game with an edge is valuable. For me fourth liners should be guys who lay the body and/or kill penalties. Hockey is debatable, but I simply do not see the fourth line as a developmental training ground for smallish, skilled kids.

Old info by now, but I like seeing who made the club more than who was cut

I see Pezzetta sticking around, as he's in competition with a different class of player than those other guys. Until a player like Tuch or Florian is NHL ready, and can provide the physicality that Pez does he's safe. I was curious and looked up Pezzetta's hit statistics from last year. He was 10th overall with 242 hits, despite less games played and lower TOI/GP than everyone ahead of him. He ranked 6th in Hits/60. That'll keep him around as a 13th forward.

I want to see how he handles being demoted to Laval ... it didn't hurt Jesperi Kotkaniemi ... in hindsight, it was necessary, and Kotkan came back to the show, a better-prepared player ... that was the 2019-20 season, though ... I don't think he's progressed the way Carolina had envisioned ... Cheers.

Well, the practice lines confirmed that Marty is fully into the veteran camp. The guys who beat out Roy? Probably sitting on Wednesday. Anderson on the third line, a 27 year old quadruple A guy (BB) who will never be on our contending team on the 3rd line. Ann uninspired former Coyote on the third line. All defensible moves, of course, (I would have Kapinen and Heineman on the third line, but what do I know?). The Veteran code persists with MSL and I wonder how long Hughes and Gorton are going to put up with making moves to improve the team and Marty taking his time inserting those guys.
If neither BB nor Anderson accomplish much in the first month of the season Marty is going to have to respond. Tony Marinaro was livid on his podcast today, at Josh Anderson not doing anything that game against TO when Pare nailed Dach while Anderson was on the ice. Marinaro felt that the non response from the Habs on the ice, forced Arber to send the message later on, which hurt him because of the penalties applied. I have to agree. If Marty wants a pack mentality, they can't wait for Xhekaj or Pezzetta to do it. Those guys are there for matchups and Assured destruction, but responses to hits like Grieg's has to be immediate. Clean checks are fine, but Grieg targeted Dach hoping for the situation to arise as it did, with Dach focused on getting past his man and not being head hunted by a predator. Especially since it was Anderson who is supposed to be tough.
Clearly he isn't and he either doesn't feel part of the team or is afraid to get involved. Neither possibility is inspiring. I wonder if Hughes has increased his ransom price to send Josh packing.

I don't think Marty has much of a choice but to play the vets at this point. Most vets treat the pre-season as a nuisance. So Marty can't judge much on those games. And that's fine if they're ready to go when it's for real.
As for Josh, he better be ready to go. If after two months he's having the season he had last year - off to Laval. And he should know, that if he ain't piutting up the points, then he better be using his size. As for Gally, with his hustle and no quit, he will always be good for bottom 6 duty. Sure he's over paid but at least he can contribute. I'm good with giving Armia a chance on the 2nd line. He is in his prime and hopefully learned something from his time in Laval last year. It's now or never for him. With Dvo, we just gotta ride out the year. Hopefully he can be a decent defensive 3rd liner centre and good on the face-offs.
If 3 of the 4 vets can play like we believed they could, we should be fine. Problem is I'm not sure if any will not be a liability. Gally seems like the only one who won't disappoint due to his effort. But let's see!!!

I have zero patience with Anderson, Dvo and Armia, if they dog it, send them to Laval for 2 weeks and they'll still get paid but they can ride the bus and be around guys fighting to move up.

Wow! One month grace from some, two month grace from others. No. A one month grace is 15 games. A two month grace is 28 games. No.
If they aren’t working out after 2 weeks they should be benched. That’s 7 games. That’s enough of the season to waste trying to decide who wants to be a part of the solution and who doesn’t.
Oh and Gally? He hasn’t worked out in 2 years. He ain’t getting any freebies anymore. I couldn’t care less at how hard he works. He spends more time on his @ss than he does putting up points. His salary dictates he put up points, not floundering around on the ice

His salary dictates he put up points, not floundering around on the ice You sort of have to ignore salaries with both Anderson and Gally, hard as it is. Their contracts aren't on the ice competing against anyone. If Anderson isn't a 3rd line quality, he goes to the 4th and if he doesn't do the job there, it's the press box or Laval. A demotion is an easy way to recapture $1MM of cap space. If he was waived, I wonder if some team with CAP space and needing a veteran of that type for say, 3 years, might be tempted. After all he's big, tall and good looking. What's there to lose? (Don't knock the snide remark about 'tall and good looking'). There is proven research that good looking people get higher approvals from the population at large. Maybe not from those who actually want to see what results those people can provide, but that's a minority.
