Thought I'd start a thread for comments on this year's tournament. Canada's first game is about to start. We don't have quite the presence we had on Canada last year, but at least we have one prospect (Subban). I'm very interested in how Pacioretty and Weber will do. And I hope (being the rascal that I am) that Team USA's defense will fall on their faces and the guys making the picks will be excoriated (love that word) for passing on McDonagh.

First period over and it's 0-0 against the Czech Republic. Some jitters on the Canadian team, but they were getting better late in the period. Subban hasn't gotten a lot of ice time (about 3 shifts), but made some good decisions in his own end and a couple of decent passes. Doughty was extremely nervous and turned over the puck a few times, but again, was calmer late in the period. It's a young team we have, so confidence is a huge factor. A goal early in the 2nd would be marvelous.

Final score 3-0. Subban started playing a little dangerously in the 3rd and sat out a few shifts. My overall impressions of our team are that they are pretty decent, but my lack the scoring punch that takes them over the top. The team has a lot of good 2 way players, and checkers. Tavares scored 2 goals in what must have been about 5 minutes of playing time. I think Hartsburgh should consider moving him to a regular line...with Stamkos?
Bernier looked very solid. anyway a decent start to the WJC.

2-0 win today against Slovakia. How far will defense and goaltending bring them? Still not seeing much of Pernell.

Still not seeing much of Pernell. I didn't see him play a single shift Thursday. However, on Wednesday, Hartsburg knew the team would be playing the next day. On Thursday he went with his best players toward the end of the game; they have a day to rest before the next game Saturday. My guess is that Subban will see more icetime toward the end of the series, if he is more consistently cautious when he should be. Toward the end of Wednesday's game I was interested to see Subban muscling a Czech player away from the puck in front of the Canadian net. The Czech was obviously very annoyed but he couldn't do anything about it and PK made it clear that he wasn't impressed. I was also interested to see in the player self-introductions before the game that PK made a point of giving his name slowly and clearly (syllables of the surname equally accented), as if to say "All right, people, learn to pronounce my name properly. You'll be hearing it often in the next twenty years."

I just saw the best part of the WJC so far. The player of the game medal presentations. Wow, cleavage or what. Great looking girls helping with the ceremony.

4-1 for Canada over Denmark. Another disappointing offensive performance. Something's missing this year. Let's hope the goalies stand on their heads.

Another 4-1 game, over the Yanks. I wonder if they aren't wishing they had McDonagh on their blue line? ;D

The US were the best team in the tournament for all but the last two periods. Welcome to the knockout round. In fairness to Canada, they also raised their game to a far higher level than they had achieved as a team prior to this game. Welcome to the knockout round.

Just watched the 1st period of the bronze medal game.
The Americans are down 3-0 & look unmotivated - taking some real stupid penalties.
Unless I missed somrthing I think I have seen Pacioretty on the ice twice. Fans get excited when prospects make the national team but what's the big deal when they hardly play?

Is it just me or does anyone else find the TSn coverage just too much. They did the bronze medal game & now they are doing a 2 hour pre game before the gold medal game. No detail goes unreported. BTW, there is also too much McGuire. He is so opinionated. He pronounced some "Crosbyesque" the other day, think it was Stamkos. And today he says Van Riemsdyk, who hasn't played a minute of pro hockey, is going to have a better career than John Leclair.
