I've done my homework, the answer is in, the best gm in the NHL is Brian Burke of the Canucks. Look around the league, there a several so-called former Canuck prospects who felt the wrath of Burke's toe. He doesn't fool around, he sees weakness and gets rid of it. None of his trades or fa signing can be called a failure. Now he has a very solid, young club, a serious cup contended and he built it all through good judgement. Oh sure if one nit piks enough there may be the odd mis-calculation but nothing as serious as thr Habs have with the likes of McKay, Czerkawski, Traverse, etc., etc. He also has acomplished this with a tight budget.

You are giving him a tad too much credit...
The Nucks, before he got there....made 2 unreal steals
Naslund for Stojanov
Bertuzzi AND McCabe for Linden
The foundation was already in place. Not too mention Ohlund was already drafted.
-----------
Burke's deals:
Bure+Ferrence for Jovo+Weekes+1st rounder--->good deal
Mogilny for Morrison+Pederson----> good deal
Weekes+Scatchard+Muckalt for Potvin-->horrible deal
Traded McCabe+first rounder(in 2000) to get one of the Sedins(I believe it was 3rd pick in 1999)--->decent deal
Traded Aucoin for Cloutier---> good deal
Traded Pederson+Berehowsky for Letowki and Warriner--> good deal
Traded first rounder in 02 draft for Linden-->decent trade
Traded Druken+Hlavac for Malik and Langdon--->decent trade
Traded Schaeffer for Salo---> good trade
Signed Skudra---> good move
A good resume...but IMO not the best gm in the league...that would be, imo, LaCroix or Lamoriello...

Well Marc LaCroix has an endless amount of financial support behind him, Lou has always been top-rated and yes he still is there, but I think that Burke has turned water into wine. One big negative I will say about Burke, is his lack of success at the draft table. He's improving there as well, but he has had a plethora of early picks who bombed. I'll still take Burke, although I certainly don't like him even a little bit. His arrogance is beyond belief, but he takes no Saperlipopette from anybody ( Andre is good at this too).

The draft is one of the reasons why I say Lacroix and Lou are better..........
I also think Burke inherited a ton of great assets(Bure, Mogilny, Bertuzzi, Naslund, Ohlund) and was able to rebuild the franchise around them or the returns on the trades
