Just in, Nedved and Markanen to the Oilers for Helminen(?), Valiquette and a 2nd round pic.
This move suprises me a bit from the oilers... Picking up a 32 year old guy on pace for his worst point total since the lock out season and who has a large contract doesnt quite fit the typical Oilers plan? looks like Sather is trying to monopolize the 2nd round of a weak draft.

Good for the Oilers. I'm really rooting for them to make the playoffs. As of right now, they're the only Canadian team on the outside looking in.
I think the plan would be to team up Nedved with Dvorak. They seemed to work quite well when they played together on the Blueshirts.
In any case, similar to the Habs, it's nice to see the Oilers make a bold trade and do something for now, rather than always waiting for tomorrow.

Sorry, FG . . . it's only going to be 5/6. Their sched, I fear, is too tough. While they're only 6 away from 8th, I don't think they can scratch and claw up -- though I hope they do (as long as they don't push the Flames out).

Is Nedved UFA? Maybe the Oilers just picked him up for a playoff push.
The Markinnen acquisition is interesting as it leaves Lowe with three goalies. Maybe he will try to move Salo.

I thought the Markinnen addition made no sense. Didn't Edmonton trade Juicy to New York in the off season (JUNE 03)already for Brian Leetch's rights? Now he returns? And Lowe is thinking about giving New York back the same compensatory pick that New York gave them last year. This smells "OILy" to me. Almost planned. The worst part of this trade is that means Ryan Smyth is staying put.
