As Leafs' fans around Cambridge, Ontario (1 hr. west of Toronto) tell me, a Habs' loss is as good as a Leafs' win...well, I gotta say, I'm finally turning the vice-versa on that one. Leafs' fans are more obnoxious than ever.
On TO sports radio today, they were all so cocky, even after being outplayed in Game 1 (lucky for the Leafs' that Cechmanek played like Dryden on New Year's Eve 1975).
Leafs' fans are calling for Bob Cole's head (on Penaltybox.com). Why? Because he's not cheerleading like Cherry? Cherry, at the end of the game, couldn't even admit that the Leafs have been horribly outshot, outhustled, and outhit in both games. All he could say was, "Hey, ya can't expect to win both games. They got the split." Then he wanted to show some stupid highlight between Brashear and Domi.
And, of course, now the "injury-excuse wagon" is being brought out of the garage. What about all this "depth" I've heard about all year? I'm really learning to love to HATE the Leafs...and it's all because of the fans. They love to rub in the fact that for the past 5 years, the Leafs have had a better team than the Habs. So, I point out that in the 61 years since the beginning of the Original Six-era in 1942-43, the Habs have had a better regular season finish 50 times...including 30 years in a row from 64 to 94. Before this past 5-year stretch, the Leafs were better a mere 6 times in 56 years. No wonder they're crowing now. But I'm afraid this will be their last year to do so. They'll be looking for a new goalie next year...and rueing the trading away of draft picks for Housley, Gilmour, and Wesley. Housley was impotent on Philly's first two goals tonight. And yet Leafs' fans crow as if they've won the Cup 35 times since '67.
Looks good on the pro-Leaf CBC, too. I think Harry Neale is beside himself.
