The Maple Leafs were once a proud organization.
Conn Smythe loved the country, had a sense of duty and a sense of pride. He was a war hero as were quite a number of his players who dropped the sticks and went and fought for the country.
The pride of the Maple Leafs was huge and they went out and won 11 Stanley Cups, a few of them against all odds.
Then the beginning of the end.
Harold Ballard.
He turned Conn Smythe's son against him and in quite the coup took the Leafs over. The first thing Harold did was took sections out of the gardens and added more seats (who cares they were all too close together) because what was important was the almighty buck.
He then changed the logo and took players names off the backs of the jerseys...it was cheaper that way.
He made himself an apartment in the loft where he would entertain various low life's, prostitutes and just plain sleepers.
When little boys were being sexually assaulted in the gardens what did he do? Put a stop to it? No, the allegations are that Ballard asked one of the minors who had been abused by John Roby and Gordon Stuckless to perform a sexual act upon him, and, when rebuffed, banned him from the Gardens.
He provided seasons tickets to many ticket brokers (scalpers) to ensure the Gardens would always be sold out and took a cut of the extra profits made on them. Those ticket brokers still have them to this day. Haven't you ever wondered why when there are no seats left you see these guys with mitt fulls of them in front of the Gardens and now the ACC?
He was a tyrant of the highest order, sick, twisted and responsible for ruining many, many lives including the adult one of those boys became finally going on to taking his own life.
This team is often said to be God's team, I have news for you...God hates the Leafs and has good reason to. The Leafs we see now have been built on the ashes of Sodom and Gomorrah.
I know many will scoff, well I'll tell you this...it is said that the curses of the forefathers will also curse to the 2nd and 3rd generation. I don't think it is coincidence that the Leafs are always getting hurt, or having a stick break or a post etc. etc.
I think they are paying back and paying back large.
If the Leafs want to win the Cup again here is what they should do.
* Anything in the ACC that has anything to do with Ballard should be removed, that includes changing the Leaf back to the pre Ballard era Leaf.
* They should look after the families of those men who were abused as boys. Those families should never want for another thing as long as they live. They should also issue a public apology for the stuff that went on and own up to it.
* They should take the tickets back from the ticket brokers and put them back in the hands of the fans that have supported them for so long. No way should a real fan not be able to go see a game, while scalpers are out front with 50 tickets apiece in their grubby hands.
Then, once they have made peace with God, Karma or whatever you want to refer to him/her/it as, they can build the team they think will make it and give it another run.
As long as there is a mausoleum full of skeletons under the carpet as it were, this team will not go anywhere near the Cup.
Sound crazy? You bet.
Do I believe it 100% anyway? Yes.
