How many other players can you think of who have Sundin's stature (captaincy, points in the regular season, team records, etc.)...and who consistently haven't shown up in the playoffs. Sundin has never led this team to a great finish. He played a good series against Jersey a couple years ago....but really, a guy with his size and skill should show up for EVERY playoff game and DOMINATE.
Instead, for $9 million a year, he's a regular season darling at best, whose salary and commitment would be a perfect fit on the Ranger$.
Now, he'll probably head to the World Championships and play for Sweden, where he'll excel as he always does in International Hockey, where there's more open ice and less hitting. As big and as strong as he is, Mats Sundin doesn't have the grit to play NHL-playoff hockey.

Sundin sucks man! I hate him! hehehe!! He's a wimp! I don't think he has the grit to play anything! The Leafs should send him back to Sweded for good....they won't miss him....he can be replaced...better to have brisebois on the team than Sundin! hehehehe!!

Keith Tkachuk. Keith Primeau is another. Tkachuk ok....Primeau, I disagree....we was the biggest pain in the Laffs' collective butts this past series...I thought he played a huge part in their win, regardless of his point production. If we are only talking point production, I may agree with you, but Keith brings an aweful lot more to the table than offense alone... THF

That was probably his best playoff series in a long time though...

true...but let us not forget that pretty much everyone on the team was against Barber...We see now that with a good coach, that the players like and respect, they will give it 100% ... it's the major difference. I remember when Primeau was with Carolina, he was also dominant. I wouldn't put him in the same category as Tkachuk and Sundin....IMO

74 31-34-65 are not terrible numbers for playoff production (Sundin)... but I'd like to know how many game-winners and clutch goals he's scored before judging him too harshly, although he was terribly disappointing this year, especially without Mogilny to get him assists.

Keith Primeau - 9 goals in 104 playoff games. 'Enuff Said.

Sundin always leaves people wanting more. He has the skill and the size to be dominant and the salary to suggest he should be a superstar. But since he has joined the Leafs he has never been more than a point a game player. He will have a multi point game than go 2 to 3 games without a point.
His playoff performances are similar. But I think the expectations of the fans in Toronto are raised by that enormous salary.

I agree with you RR ...but the question was how many players 'consistently haven't shown up in the playoffs' and I don't believe it to be the case for Primeau. THF

Actually, until the Leafs early dismissal from the playoffs this year, I thought Sundin was coming around.
I remember in the earlier years he couldn't get off the ice fast enough for fear of getting tagged.
However, he came around last year and was a pretty tough playoff performer. Like a lot of his teammates, I think he was inspired by Gary Roberts. He was tough as nails at one point.
Then he seemed to regress a tad this year. Like a lot of his teammates, he seemed to disappear. Not what you'd expect from your captain who makes decent coin.
Would he be my choice for captain? No. That is Gary Roberts' team. After Roberts they're all a bunch of followers. Similarily the way the Habs are.
Oh well.
Cheers.
