Russian NHL prospect Igor Grigorenko improving after car crash MOSCOW (AP) - Detroit Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko, who was injured in an auto accident earlier this month, is improving significantly, the news agency Interfax reported Thursday.
The 20-year-old Russian forward was taken off a respirator and was fully conscious, although his condition was still serious. Grigorenko underwent surgery for hip and leg fractures and his condition deteriorated when he suffered an embolism, apparently brought on by the fractures.

Agent: Grigorenko recovery a 'miracle'
Canadian Press 6/3/2003
DETROIT (AP) - Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko is out of intensive care and doing much better, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.
``It was a miracle with him,'' Grigorenko's agent Mark Lapush told the paper. ``The doctor told me now he feels Igor's going to be all right.''
The 20-year-old forward, a Russian hockey star, lost control of his car and crashed May 16. He suffered a broken left thigh and shin bones, and later developed a fat embolism in his left lung - a potentially fatal complication. He was on a ventilator and heavily sedated due to breathing problems, high blood pressure and a fever.
After he was taken off the ventilator late last week, Grigorenko began talking a little bit and eating on his own. Now he is talking more. Lapush said he spoke to him on the phone Saturday night.
Grigorenko is resting at a hospital in Togliatti, Russia. The Wings eventually want to bring him to Detroit, but there are no plans for him to move anytime soon.
``He can't travel until he gets stronger,'' assistant general manager Jim Nill said. ``We're just kind of going week by week now. We're just waiting to get him out of the hospital.''

Grigorenko leaves hospital

Detroit Red Wings prospect Igor Grigorenko was released from hospital on Tuesday, almost a month after suffering life threatening injuries in a car crash.
Grigorenko's agent Mark Lapush spoke on behalf of his client with Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, saying the player is "feeling good" and is looking forward to playing in the NHL.
"He said, 'Mark, trust me, I'm going to play hockey. I'm going to play for Detroit,'" Lapush tells the Detroit Free Press.
Grigorenko plans to play for a Russian team in five to six months and hopes to be in the Red Wings lineup for the 2004-05 season - unless there is a work stoppage/strike following next year.
"It was very encouraging to have a conversation with Igor," said Holland said. "We're obviously thrilled. With the hospital releasing him, his future looks bright. Now we just have to let the healing process run its course. He's got a long way to go."
Grigorenko suffered a badly broken left leg after being involved in a car accident back on May 16. He then developed a fat embolism in his left lung which resulted in trouble breathing, high blood pressure and a fever. He was placed on a ventilator and heavily sedated.
His condition eventually stablized and he is now able to move around on crutches.
