Val-d’Or, Que. – It was rather appropriate that after Sidney Crosby’s name was announced as the first overall pick in yesterday’s draft, a spotlight found him. From here on in, that spotlight is only going to get more intense.
The Rimouski Oceanic surprised nobody yesterday when they selected the 15-year-old Cole Harbour native No. 1 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft. Crosby is well aware the top billing comes with added pressure. In fact, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I set this goal, probably a year or two ago, and now that it’s here, it’s good, but I want more,” Crosby said in an interview shortly after his selection. “I’m happy, but I don’t want to be complacent and just be happy to go No. 1. You’ve got to prove why you go No. 1.”
Now that he’s the top pick on paper, he wants to translate that to the ice.
I have a lot to prove
“I have a lot to prove — I haven’t stepped foot in this league yet,” said Crosby. “I have to make sure when it’s time to play, I can prove that I deserved to be No. 1.
“Rimouski did their part. Now, I think it’s time to do mine.”
Even though everyone knew Crosby would go No. 1, he still took nothing for granted.
“I was 99 per cent sure,” Crosby said. “But you never know until you hear your name called. It’s a pretty special day for me.”
And nerve-racking at the same time. Sitting with his parents before the draft, Crosby was visibly anxious, hunched forward in his chair, rubbing his hands. Like a kid waiting to be called in to see the principal.
“I wasn’t too nervous,” he said. “I woke up at 6:30 a.m. and didn’t sleep much after that, but then I calmed down. As soon as I got here, and the place was almost packed at 9:15, 9:30 — that got me nervous a little bit.
“But once you hear your name called and once everything is done, it’s pretty relaxing.”
When his name was announced, Crosby rose from his seat and hugged his parents, Troy and Trina.
“He worked hard over the last few years; he deserves this,” said Troy Crosby. “That was his goal, to go No 1.”
It’s telling that throughout the interview, Crosby made several references to working hard this summer to be ready for training camp. A recent visit to Rimouski was inspiring.
“They love to win,” Crosby said about the Oceanic. “You can tell in the owners, the management and the coaches, they’re all committed to winning. That’s a good environment to be in, especially just after visiting the town.
“You could tell people were great and they supported the team. You couldn’t really ask for much more.”
