Has Mario Lemieux signed another contract with the Penguins? what's his status? He is a UFA this year, and there were some talk about him selling his part of the franchise and finishing his career in another club.

He has stated publicly that he will play no where but in Pittsburgh. I wish I had a link to supply but forgive me. I think it was TSN. Anyone?

I think that initially he did want to sell his stake in the club and suit up for another team. But after he saw that there would probably be no buyers for the Pens, he decided the best thing to do would be to play another season in Pittsburgh and make another attempt at getting a new arena.

Mario has had a great career. He's an outstanding player, fierce competitor, overcame adversity, retired too soon, came back, incredible scorer, and a quiet leader by example. When he decides to hang it up it will be his decision alone. I would encourge him to retire except he's still one of the best in the league outplaying guys twenty years his junior.

I find it amazing that Mario is still dominating at his age. When "The Great One" was getting older, he still played a big part on the ice, but nowhere near the level that Mario is still playing at (When he's Playing). Imagine if he had a healthy back!!

Amazing when you think that Dale Hawerchuck was the #1 Draft pick in 1981 and Mario was #1 in 1984, a scant three years later. I believe Dale is gumming porridge in a Seniors Center in Florida and his stiffest competition is bingo on wednesdays.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest, but Mario Lemieux is the single most dominant offensive player in the history of the game - better than Wayne Gretzky, IMO. The fact that he can still put up the kind of numbers at his age, with his injury history, against kids half his age is a testament to his supreme talent.
Gretzky was not putting up these kind of numbers at this stage in his career; his talent was not as dazzling, but probably more important, the style of play in the NHL was a real limiting factor for Wayne. That has not been the case for Mario.
It's pointless to argue who was the "greater" player, but in terms of individual talent, I would have to say that Mario was the more complete package. As a pure scorer he was almost like a basketball player in the way he could beat guys one-on-one and there is NOBODY I would want to take a penalty shot in a key situation other than Mario.
Gretzky was a great open-ice player who had incredible quickness, vision, and puck control, but despite the fact that he scored 92 FREAKING GOALS in 1984, I still think Mario was a better offensive player over the course of his career, and has higher career PPG totals than Wayne.

Let us not forget Mike Bossy. I believe that if he played a 20 year career with no health problems, he would be number 2 in goals scored, or maybe even #1. And Mario not far behind, and maybe passing him at the #2 postion.

Not to take anything away from Wayne......
But look at the difference in teams they played on. Edmonton was a team of all-stars where Pittsburgh was God awful when the got Lemieux. Also, nobody touched Wayne, or they payed the price.... Mario didnt have that wonderful treatment. The NHL found out early, if you stop Mario, you stop the Penguins. Mario got pounded on, and it is evident when looking at all his injuries.
Tough to see who is better, but I would think that if both played in the same situation.... it would be pretty damn close.
I think Lemieux takes the cake when looking at individual talent.
