In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not released. ''Ville is a skilled winger who plays an in-your-face style. He is a hard player to play against," said Blackhawks General Manager Mike Smith. "His combination of skill and grit adds depth to our club on the wing." Nieminen, appeared in 75 games last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins scoring nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points and 93 penalty minutes while averaging 14:08 minutes of ice time per game. He led the Penguins with two shorthanded goals last season while also ranking second on the club with 93 penalty minutes and sixth in points. Nieminen was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 3rd round (78th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the Penguins along with Rick Berry by the Avalanche in exchange for Darius Kasparaitis on March 19, 2002. Nieminen has appeared in 192 career NHL games scoring 70 points (34g, 36a) and 169 penalty minutes. As a member of the 2001 Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche, Nieminen led all NHL rookies in playoff goals (4), assists (6), points (10), power play goals (3) and power play points (4). He also represented his homeland of Finland at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Good move by the Hawks. Niemo is a fine 3rd liner. Worth the risk at that price and at his age.
