The 26-year-old Isbister, who accepted his qualifying offer, was acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders on March 11 along with forward Raffi Torres in exchange for defenceman Janne Niinimaa and a draft pick. ``Brad adds a lot of size and strength to our lineup and we are extremely pleased to have him back for another year,'' said Kevin Prendergast, the team's vice-president of hockey operations. In 13 games with the Oilers last season, Isbister recorded three goals and two assists. In 53 games with the Islanders, Isbister scored 10 goals with 15 assists. He earned $1.8 million US last season. In other moves, the Chicago Blackhawks re-signed 22-year-old forward Mark Bell while Detroit locked up defenceman Jamie Rivers for another year. Bell, whose salary was $975,000 last season, played all 82 regular season games for the Blackhawks and had 14 goals, 15 assists and 113 penalty minutes. The Blackhawks selected the six-foot-three, 198-pound forward from St. Paul's, Ont., first overall in the 1998 entry draft. Rivers, a 28-year-old from Ottawa, has played in 340 career NHL games, but spent most of last season playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League.
