In accordance with club policy, terms of the contract were not released. Tarnstrom, 28, led all Penguins’ defensemen last season in goals (7), assists (34) and points (41) and ranked second on the team in assists and third in scoring while playing in 61 games. He ranked third on the team last season with 25 power-play points and ranked second with 22 power-play assists. Tarnstrom’s 41 points last season represented the highest single season point total by a Penguins’ defenseman since Kevin Hatcher recorded 48 points during the 1997-98 season. Tarnstrom was tied for ninth in the league among defensemen last season in power-play points, tied for 14th in assists and tied for 16th in scoring. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Sundyberg, Sweden was claimed off waivers by the Penguins from the New York Islanders on August 7, 2002.
