Wow...sucks to be the Wings right now...or does it? The money isn't a problem, none of us own the Wings right? So now CuJo comes back in January in time for the stretch run. Right now everyone is optomistic about their situation in goal so not many teams are willing to make a deal. But what if Cloutier is having a miserable year? The Blues could have huge injury problems in goal like last year? For some reason the combo of Shields and Raycroft isn't working for the Bruins? This could actually benefit the Wings because the market for CuJo will likely be much better in January. They could end up getting an impact player back in return for the stretch run.

This is great news for the Habs! I doubt the Bruins will want him now and they will still be stuck with Lapointe's deal ;D

It seems logical to me that the Wings will protect Hasek and Legace. If someone wants to pick up an aging and injured $8M goalie who will likely play half the season, let 'em go for it.

They had the same situation two years ago when they signed Hasek, lost Osgood and kept Legace. In fact, I'm pretty sure they won't protect Joseph, and nobody will take him, even the Bruins (too much money for somebody who's injured and can't play until january). They will have three goaltenders and trade Joseph later in the season. However, the situation ain't that good for the Redwings, as they will have to show that CuJo is in good shape. Hasek benched to let Joseph play ? I wouldn't like to be the coach. Mic

Yeah, they will probably leave Cujo unprotected... But that just makes things more interesting.
Isn't it true that while Cujo is injured the insurance company pays his contract and not the team? It would be smart to pick up Cujo for nothing, only have to pay half his salary, and have his ready for the last half of the season and a good run in the playoffs. This is especially true for the cost-concious Bruins.
And of course, the Wings would never trade Cujo to the Avs, but if he's left unprotected in the waiver draft, what's stopping them from picking him up?
hmmmm....

Insurance only kicks in after 25 games missed apparently

Well, that certainly changes things! I wonder if teams still want him as much despite the injury..

Well, that certainly changes things! I wonder if teams still want him as much despite the injury.. A team like Colorado could be quite content playing their platoon of #2 goalies for the first half of the season, counting on all their talent to keep them competitive. Then they would bring in Cujo post-injury to gear up for their serious playoff, and potential Cup, run. After all, they still have money in the bank after Roy, Selanne and Kariya. Detroit will probably not protect him, but that means if someone does pick him up they have lost a marketable asset. Also, the Bruins who were ready to move on him, are still stuck with their current lineup of goalies. That is good news for the Habs, as we want to make headway against the Bruins this season.

For the Avs to pick up Cujo, they will have to wait until 20 something teams pass on him. I believe the waver pick order is the same as the draft order.
That means that the B's, Rags and Blues all pick before the Avs.
If I'm wrong, just let me know.

I think that the waiver draft first round is only opened to teams that did not make the playoff.. but I may be wrong.

If Colorado were interested in Cujo, which they probably are, they could make a deal with a team like Carolina to take him with the first pick and then trade him to the Avalanche.
Carolina would have to place a protected player on waivers once they took Cujo, but if the deal is worth it I'm sure they would.
If Boston is serious they wil make the trade before the waiver draft regardless of the injury.

Colorado's going to go with Aebischer, so they won't be going after any goalie...at least until they realize how much weaker they really are in net.

Aebischer 69 games (career), 32-25-3, 6 SO, 2.18, .917, $0.5M, 25 years old.
Joseph 61 games (2002-03), 34-19-6, 5 SO, 2.49, .912, $8M, 36 years old.
Scrujo Cujo, go with the kid. They both have the same number of Stanley Cup rings.

actually, Aebischer has 1 cup ring..as a backup Well, there's the clincher, then. Cujo belongs on a team that takes pride in making the playoffs. Aebischer has already tasted horse piss from the goblet.
