Penguins sign Simpson and Berehowsky
Canadian Press
8/29/2003
PITTSBURGH (CP) - Free agents Reid Simpson and Drake Berehowsky have signed with the Penguins, the NHL club announced Friday.
Simpson, a left winger, joins his ninth NHL team in 13 pro seasons.
Simpson, 34, of Flin Flon, Man., had one assist and 56 penalty minutes in 26 games with the Nashville Predators last season, and also played for their AHL affiliate in Milwaukee.
He previously played in the NHL with Philadelphia, Minnesota, New Jersey, Chicago, Tampa Bay, St. Louis and Montreal. In 299 career games, he has 36 points (18-18) and 821 penalty minutes. Berehowsky, 31, a defenceman from Toronto, played for Pittsburgh briefly in 1994-95. He's also played for Toronto, Edmonton, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix.
Last season, he played only seven games, missing 59 recuperating from knee surgery. In 493 career NHL games, he has 125 points (31-94).
He had his best years with the Predators, earning 73 points (20-53) in two-plus seasons, 1998-2001.
If you ask me, this team kind of reminds me of what the Habs tried to do last year, except worse. It looks like they're signing veterans to help lead a bunch of unproven youngsters. Perhaps they can sneak into the playoffs; who knows? This team looks just like an expansion club right now.

I have no clue what the hell the Pens are trying to do.
For a team that is 'rebuilding' they have tons of vets who are just not good and won't serve much puporse. What's the point of having Steve McKenna, Reid Simpson and Kelly Buchberger to battle it out for the 4th line? can't they give that spot to a hungry kid?

I have no clue what the hell the Pens are trying to do. I don't think anybody does. I'm not even certain whether these players are going to be given sufficient playing time or not. Apparently Rico Fata did really well after being traded from the Rangers...but then again anybody who plays with Mario can rack up 50 points without breaking a sweat.

This team looks just like an expansion club right now. It sure does. Actually, the sad thing is that I've seen expansion rosters that look better than the Pens 2003/04 roster. Their entire franchise is hoping for a better CBA, and it seems as if they're hanging on by a string until they get to September of 2004.
