KITCHENER—Around the time Rane Palmer turned 5, a pair of skates changed his name and his life. They were a gift from his grandfather, Herb Carnegie, and from that day on, the youngster forged an identity as a hockey player and a Carnegie. Thirteen years later, Rane Carnegie is getting the opportunity that was denied his grandfather at a time when Toronto was much whiter and society far less enlightened. Herb Carnegie had a legendary career in the minors and earned a reputation as "the greatest player never to play in the NHL," but as far as Rane is concerned, he was an even better grandfather and surrogate father. - full article
