Pat Burns no devil in Hells Angels case: cops
By KEVIN MASTERMAN, SUN MEDIA
TORONTO -- Pat Burns will always be on the right side of the law, said former cops who were on the force during the New Jersey Devils coach's days as a police officer breaking up bar brawls and working undercover in Quebec.
"Pat did a good job and I have got no doubt about anything he did," said former Quebec police chief Joel Cheruet.
Yesterday, a Sun Media story revealed that, among evidence presented at the recent murder trial of 12 Hells Angels, police found Burns's personal phone numbers, including his home, pager and chalet numbers, in the homes of two prominent bikers.
Attempts to reach Burns yesterday for comment were unsuccessful.
The former Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens coach has not responded to interview requests made to the Stanley Cup-champion Devils on his relationship with bikers.
However, in August, he said in a magazine story: "I don't question each person whose hand I shake or with whom I am photographed."
SMILING WITH MURDER SUSPECTS
A picture of a smiling Burns with murder suspects and Nomads gang members Donald "Pup" Stockford and Walter "Nurget" Stadnick was also found by police.
Cheruet said Burns did go undercover in his 17-year stint as a cop, sometimes using his Harley on the job to get information from bikers.
The chief said gangs never took root in the small town.
"We kicked them out," Cheruet said of raids on suspected biker dens, in which they sometimes found pictures, names and addresses of officers.
"They did the same investigation on us as we did on them."
He added that Burns made a fine officer, even solving a case involving the murder of a gay priest.
"He was a good partner in (investigating) high crime," Cheruet said.
Another detective at the time, Richard Longpre, said he would be "very surprised" if Burns had a connection to bikers.
