from SLAM!: With incentives, Fleury's contract could be worth more than $5 million a year, a large undertaking for a financially strapped franchise that has traded away high-priced players, including Jaromir Jagr and Alexei Kovalev, to slash payroll in recent years. Fleury will receive $400,000 if he reaches any one of these incentives: 20 victories; a 3.25 goals-against average; an .890 save percentage; 1,800 minutes played; four shutouts over the term of the contract; and a top-three finish in the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year) balloting this season. If Fleury achieves just two of those benchmarks this season, he receives a flat $4 million bonus. He would need to hit three incentives in his second year and four in the third to get the $4 million bonus in those seasons. there's something really wrong with this whole system of rookie incentive-laden contracts. I mean, 4 mil. for .890 save % and 3.25 GAA ? and we thought Theo didn't deserve his money last year. now, I know that the Pens' managment are also to blame, but IIRC, Fleury did hold out until a deal had been reached. and his agent(s) had the power of bargining in a similar types of contracts around the league: Ruutu, Kovalchuk, Gaborik are those whose contracts have been mostly mentioned as examples. I just don't know why the bar for getting bonuses is set so low? I mean, how much would you give to a goalie with 3.25 GAA and .890%? is the blame here really on management or the system? somehow, I just can't believe they are that, well, stupid... R.
