Even though this is Habs related, it's not about the team.....it's about the play-by-play and color commentary on Sportsnet West.
I've always respected Jim Hughson as the most non-biased announcer when calling a game. Last night changed my mind. He was a Canuck cheerleader all night long. And John Garrett was beyond homer.
In one segment, Bertuzzi took a penalty for pushing off of a player in front of the net....both Garrett and Hughson complained about it....then somebody pushed Bertuzzi from behind and didn't get a penalty.
GARRETT: How can Bertuzzi get a penalty for what he did, then when somebody pushes him down, nothing is called?
HUGHSON: I hear what your saying, and I agree.
John Garrett actually praised Ruutu for crashing Theodore in the second period. "Just the thing to get some emotion going", he said. Appalling, coming from a former goaltender...advocating running Theo.
Would he have said the same thing had Zednik crashed Cloutier? Hardly.
I know it's the Canuck broadcast...but, like I said, I always felt that Hughson was above it. Last night he and Garrett sounded as homerish as the Detroit broadcast team of Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels.
And man can those Europeans set themselves up for and sell those "hits from behind" to draw penalties, huh? To me, that's a dive as much as feigning being hooked.

That's disappointing re: Hughson. I shared your former opinion of him and enjoyed his work on TSN.
As for Garrett, I'm not surprised. I have heard him say some pretty stupid things. An interview on the Fan 590 in Toronto comes to mind. He was making snide remarks about Ray Bourque's level of intelligence. I couldn't help thinking what a cheap shot it was. What made me angrier was that no one stepped in to defend Bourque. Garrett's announcing skills are similar to his goaltending talents - barely good enough to keep him on the A team.

Amen, they were absoutely terrible. I usually enjoy listening to Hughson but Garrett is a total idiot. They almost sounded as bad as the ultimate Laff cheerleaders Cole/Neale. Lets not become Toronto West please

I didn't get that impression. I thought Hughson was agreeing with Garret's perceptions, not his conclusions. His 'agreement' was very low key. I thought Hughson was quite complimentary to the Habs considering how badly they played at times. One of my favourites, though Garrett I would gladly stick his head in a toilet bowl and pull the handle.
