I have been reading recently some articles on doping in sports and realized that I couldn't remember a single case of a high-profile doping affair in hockey. I know of only of two cases: 1. a member of the Belarus team after the bronze medal game in SLT 2002. 2. some Estonian player a few years ago who tested positive for amphetamine and afterwards admited taking the pill offered to him in some night club
Rene Fasel, IIHF President, when talking about this, said that one of the reasons for hockey not having much problems with doping is that a lot of stimulants tend to hamper one's coordination. but he also believes that anabolic steroids could present a problem as they are used by many, especially when recovering from injuries and in between matches but more importantly among the kids who are pressured to get bigger and stronger.
I know that IIHF is very serious about this matter and, for example, doping tests have been taken after every match at the last World Championships but I also seem to remember to having read somewhere that NHL doesn't enforce doping tests on it's players.
I'd like to know what some of you think about the matter and if it's true that NHL players are not tested for doping?
thanks,
R.
